"Well, you are a lucky man today. I think it is a good idea to give you the opportunity to prove your loyalty to the crown." King Marcus leaned back into his chair behind the large desk. The sun shone through the large window above him and lightened his hair.

"Your Grace, I swear I had nothing to do with this plot against your life," Adrian said.

"I believe you, Adrian," King Marcus replied calmly. "And if you really have nothing to do with this woman's murdering attempt on my life, I'm sure it was just a coincidence that she was in your house."

Adrian stared at the king in silence. It took all his will power not to break down crying. He cursed himself for leaving his home to visit his mother in the neighboring village of Gorni when the attack happened. If he hadn't, he would've been killed by now like his mother and father who were murdered by the assassin. He tried to remember every detail about her face but couldn't recall anything but her eyes which were very sharp and piercing. It was as if she could read his mind.

"I'm still not sure what makes you innocent," King Marcus continued, leaning forward now over his desk. "But there's something different about you. Something strong that allows me to trust you."

King Marcus rose from his desk and walked over to Adrian until they stood face to face in front of each other, looking eye to eye. "You see Adrian, I know I can trust you because no normal man can see magic or wield it as you have done till now," he whispered, loud enough for only Adrian to hear him. Then he moved back and looked at Adrian intently. "The question is: Are you ready?"
