“Prison Break”

Sweat trickled down my brow as I crouched behind the rocky outcrop. My heart pounded in my chest, threatening to give away my position. The guards were getting closer, their heavy boots crunching on the gravelly ground.

“Where do you think they went?” one of them grumbled.

“How should I know? They’re just a bunch of scum anyway,” the other replied.

I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. We may have been prisoners, but that didn’t mean we deserved to be treated like animals. We were human beings, with thoughts and feelings just like them.

The guards were moving away now, their voices fading into the distance. This was our chance. I looked around at the small group huddled beside me. There were only five of us; not nearly enough to take on the guards if it came to that.

“We need to move,” I whispered urgently.

One by one, we crept out from our hiding places and made our way towards the door that led inside. It was a risk going back in there, but we needed supplies if we had any hope of making it off this godforsaken planet.

The door slid open with a hiss and we slipped inside. The room was dimly lit and filled with shelves stacked high with crates and boxes of supplies for the prison colony. We moved quickly, grabbing whatever we could carry—food rations, water bottles, anything that would help sustain us on our journey.

As I reached for a box of protein bars, something caught my eye—a shiny metal object tucked away in a corner. Curiosity got the better of me and I picked it up for a closer look. It was a keycard—the kind used by the guards to access restricted areas.

A plan began to form in my mind as I slipped the keycard into my pocket. If we could find a way to the guard station, we might be able to override the security systems and disable the perimeter defenses. It was a long shot, but it was our only hope.

I gathered the others and explained my plan. They looked at me skeptically, but they didn’t have any better ideas. We made our way through the labyrinthine corridors of the prison, avoiding the patrolling guards as best we could.

Finally, after what felt like hours, we reached the guard station. I swiped the keycard and held my breath as the door slid open. The room was empty—apparently, they hadn’t been expecting any trouble from us tonight.

We quickly got to work, hacking into their computer system and disabling the security protocols. It was harder than I thought it would be; these guards weren’t exactly tech geniuses, but they had enough safeguards in place to keep us out.

Just as I was about to give up in frustration, a message popped up on the screen: ACCESS GRANTED. I let out a whoop of triumph and high-fived one of my fellow escapees.

“All right,” I said with a grin. “Let’s get out of here.”

We made our way back outside, moving cautiously in case any guards were still lurking about. To our relief, there was no sign of them. We headed for the edge of the compound and peered into the darkness beyond.

The landscape stretched out before us—a desolate wasteland of rocky terrain and swirling dust storms. It wasn’t much to look at, but it was freedom—a chance to start over somewhere new.

We set off across the barren landscape, our hearts filled with hope for the first time in years. We didn’t know what lay ahead or where we were going, but it didn’t matter. All that mattered was that we were free.
