The Spice of Life
·
Published 1/8/2023Two strong and determined female protagonists, Jalila and Fatimah, embark on an unexpected adventure when they stumble upon two philosophizing insect brothers lamenting their lack of flavorful dinners. Can Jalila's inventive cooking save the day, and will they discover the transformative power of perspective?
Jalila and Fatimah step out of their little North African city and into the nearby gardens full of lush greenery and bright colors of nature's bounty. It is an entirely new world for them, having never been outside of the city before. They take in the sights and sounds with awe, both feeling an inexplicable sense of being at peace in this new place. As they listen to birds cheerfully chirping and the occasional buzzing of insects, both girls enter a sense of relaxation and a calmness washes over them.
A voice suddenly startles them. It wasn't a human voice but rather, a peculiar tiny voice coming directly from a brightly colored insect perched atop a bush in front of them. Before they can fully process what was said, they hear another voice responding to the first, accompanied by a second bug-like being - a brother to the first. The strange creatures are talking in a language the girls have never heard before, but they understand what they are saying - they are having a deep philosophical debate on the meaning of life.
With rapt attention, Jalila and Fatimah listen to the insect-like brothers' exchange, amazed and fascinated by their incredible level of knowledge. They debate and discuss a plethora of topics, including philosophy, morality and religion, but alas, all conversations come to a stall when the brothers both share a collective sigh of discontent due to the lack of variety in their dinner the same bad-tasting meatloaf that they have every day.
The girls finally move from their hiding place and, after some convincing, manage to win their trust and join the conversation. Their presence brings renewed energy, and the topic quickly shifts to food. Listening to the brothers' complaints about their dinner, Jalila suggests ways to liven up their meal, introducing spices, flavors and even side dishes to the mix.
The insect-like brothers, inspired by Jalila's recipes, take it upon themselves to, with her help, transform the boring meatloaf into something they all could enjoy. With Jalila's assistance, they gather all ingredients needed and once again start to engage in a new, exciting type of conversation cooking!
But their creation proves to be too much for the little bugs and they tire out, worried if they will be able to complete the meal. Jalila and Fatimah, learning of their plight, immediately set out to aid the little ones the best they can. Together, the four of them manage to finish the considerable task and create a delicious meal, one that the insect-like brothers were highly pleased with.
The night concludes with them gathering around the spread as they celebrate the joys of sharing a meal. From the flavors to the fragrances, the conversation turns from the philosophical conversations to stories and shared experiences. Everything else fades away, and now there's only three things left their cookware, makeshift table and their happy smiles. The story comes to a climax when our two protagonists finally feel the sense of acceptance and congruence within this newfound utopian-like world, soon mesmerized by the strength and power of story, recipes and newfound perspectives having rearranged what was once ordinary and unknown into something worth experiencing and sharing.
