The Dance of Chaste Justice: Hu Xin's Battle Against the Warlord
·
Published 6/26/2023In 5th century China, Hu Xin, a bold and quick-witted village girl, is faced with an impossible mission: to prevent the merciless Warlord Lian Sen from executing innocent villagers through the ancient tradition of the murga, a provocative dance involving unconventional punishment. As Hu confronts the fearsome warlord with her unique blend of humor and intellect, she transforms the notion of justice, challenging social norms and risking her own life to secure a chaste destiny for her people. But can she outsmart the formidable Lian Sen and inspire a tale of retribution, peppered with irony and steeped in unpredictable twists, in this captivating adventure unfolding against the backdrop of China's ancient past?

All of the men in the village could hear me. I had to be loud, because there was no way I could hear them with all their murmurs and cheers. They were too far away.
I walked up to the Warlord, standing on a raised wooden platform above a crowd of people who were all on their knees. He was young, maybe not even as old as my father, but he looked decrepit and exhausted; his skin sallow and his eyes bloodshot. His robes were crisp and well-kept though, and it was clear that he wasn't ill, just very tired.
"Warlord Lian Sen," I said, and his eyes opened a little wider. "My name is--"
"Hu Xin!" he shouted immediately, interrupting me. "The girl from the North who dances so well!"
He smiled at me, but I couldn't tell if it was a genuine smile or one of twisted amusement. I couldn't see any other girls dancing in the village square behind him, so he must have gotten that information from one of his scouts. Or else someone in this village had reported that I'd been practicing my dance over the past year.
"I am here to ask you for mercy on behalf of these villagers," I said clearly and loudly, gesturing to the kneeling crowd behind me. "There's been a misunderstanding."
I tried to keep my voice steady as I spoke, but my hands started shaking almost immediately after I put them on my hips. It was a very difficult position to hold due to my broken ribs and the hard wooden beam that ran vertically down my back; but it was the only way to make sure the scars on my ass were clearly visible from miles away.
Lian Sen's eyes widened again as he looked at me more closely; then he burst out laughing with such force that for a moment I thought he might fall off his platform! A few of his aides also laughed along with him before giving each other worried glances and quieting down. The rest of the crowd didn't even try to hide their laughter; they just bowed their heads and snickered like little schoolchildren.
"You're really going through with this?" Lian Sen asked between laughs. "After everything we've done to you?"
He waved a hand dismissively at his aide standing behind him; then pointed towards a number of cages lined up near one corner of the village square. The cages contained over a dozen bodies, most still alive but all badly mutilated. Many of them had lost arms or legs; some had gashes across their torsos or faces; others simply sat motionless staring blankly into space while they bled out slowly into puddles below them.
The wounds themselves weren't anything special; most of what I saw had probably been caused by regular swords rather than those made specifically for torture purposes. But they certainly looked brutal enough to frighten any sane person into submission!
"Their crimes were far worse than yours," Lian Sen stated arrogantly as he gestured towards me with both hands clasped together in front of him like an offering to me. "They're traitors! The lowest scum! And yet you've chosen to fight against us instead!"
He paused for a moment before continuing: "Why? That's what everyone here wants to know!" He approached me quickly and leaned forward until his face was inches from mine; then he started breathing heavily as if he wanted nothing more than to rip off my clothes right there in public view! "You're not afraid of us." He gave me an appraising look before adding: "You're brave...but you're not stupid either."
He turned around suddenly and walked back towards his throne while shouting: "I want this girl brought here now!"
The guards rushed towards me immediately after he finished talking; one grabbed hold of each arm while another grabbed onto the beam running down my back by its handles while pulling upwards forcefully! My whole body went rigid as pain shot through every bone in my body at once! But just before they lifted me up - leaving just enough slack for me to stay upright - Lian Sen shouted again: "No! Let her go!" Then he pointed at two guards standing next to him: "Take her clothes off first!"
The guards hesitated for a moment, exchanging uncertain glances amongst themselves, but ultimately obeyed the Warlord's command. With deft hands, they untied the knots that held my tattered garments together, stripping away the last remnants of my dignity. I clenched my teeth, fighting back a surge of anger and humiliation. The cool air caressed my bare skin, and I could feel the villagers' eyes on me, their laughter stinging like a thousand needles.
Lian Sen's gaze bore into me, his eyes gleaming with a mixture of amusement and veiled malice. He clearly enjoyed this display of power, reveling in the sadistic pleasure it granted him. His thin lips curled into a wicked grin as he drank in my vulnerability.
"Now tell me, Hu Xin," he sneered, the cruelty evident in his voice. "Are you still brave?"
I straightened my spine, refusing to let my fear consume me. My voice quivered slightly but held a strength beneath the surface. "I am not defined by fear, Warlord Lian Sen, but by my determination to seek justice," I declared, meeting his gaze defiantly. "These villagers have committed no treason. They are innocent, and it is your reign of terror that must be brought to an end."
The crowd fell silent, the villagers holding their breath, their eyes wide with a flicker of hope amidst the shadows of fear that had consumed their lives for far too long. I could see the slight falter in Lian Sen's composure, the crack in his façade.
But in an instant, his face twisted into a mask of rage. "You dare defy me?" he roared, his voice resonating through the square. "You dare to question my authority?"
Without warning, Lian Sen stepped off his throne and lunged towards me. His hand stretched out, fingers curled into a claw. I braced myself for the pain, for the inevitable strike that would follow, but the blow never landed.
A figure emerged from the crowd, intercepting Lian Sen's attack. It was an elderly man, his back slightly hunched, yet a glimmer of strength shone in his eyes. He stood before me, unyielding, shielding me from the Warlord's wrath.
"I won't let you harm her," the old man spoke, his voice firm and unwavering. "Enough blood has been spilled in your name."
The square fell silent, the tension hanging heavy in the air. Lian Sen's brows furrowed, his face contorted with fury. "Traitor!" he spat, his voice dripping with venom. "You dare to betray me?"
The old man's gaze remained steady, his voice tinged with a hint of sadness. "I betrayed nothing but the corruption that has consumed your soul, Lian Sen. It is time for this madness to end."
A murmur rippled through the crowd, whispers of dissent echoing in the wind. The villagers, once too terrified to speak against their oppressor, found their voices rising in unity, like a chorus of defiance. The time for silence had ended.
Lian Sen's rage transformed into a sinister grin. "If you think you can defy me, then suffer the consequences," he hissed, reaching for the sword at his side.
But his movements froze as a wave of shadows engulfed the square, casting the once sunlit village into darkness. The air crackled with a newfound energy, and a figure emerged from the midst of the ebony swirls.
It was someone I never expected to see again. Someone I thought had been lost forever. My heart skipped a beat as he stepped forward with a quiet confidence, the only light in the darkness.
"Xiao Hai," I whispered, my voice filled with a mixture of disbelief and elation.
His gaze met mine, a world of emotions reflected in his eyes. "I told you, Hu Xin," he said softly, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "I promised you we would fight for justice together."
And with those words, hope blossomed within me, mingling with the flickering flames of rebellion that burned bright in the hearts of the villagers. We had come too far to back down now, to let the fear dictate our lives.
Together, we would face Lian Sen and his reign of terror, and in the face of darkness, we would illuminate the path to a new dawn. The journey to freedom would be treacherous, but we were ready to endure, for the echoes of our courage would carve an indelible mark on the pages of history.
