Published 12/2/2023"Are you sure this is the right place?" Chloe asked, squinting at the crumpled map in her hand.
Nate stepped back from the crumbling stone wall and surveyed the landscape. They had been searching for weeks, following the clues left by their ancestors in hopes of finding a long-lost treasure. The map they had discovered in their grandfather's study had led them to this remote island in the Philippines, but instead of a hidden cache of gold and jewels, all they found was an overgrown jungle and a dilapidated ruin.
"I don't know," Nate admitted. "But this is where the map led us."
Chloe sighed and pushed a strand of dark hair behind her ear. "Well, it's not like we can just give up now."
Nate nodded, his determination unwavering. "You're right. Let's take one more look around." He began to circle the ruins, scanning every nook and cranny for any sign of treasure or another clue.
Chloe followed him, her eyes darting back and forth between the map and their surroundings. As she rounded a corner, something caught her eye - a small indentation in one of the stones that matched perfectly with the shape of a key on their map.
"Nate!" she called excitedly. "I think I found something!"
Her brother hurried over, and together they pressed the key into the stone. With a low rumble, the ground beneath them began to shake, and before they knew it, they were being swallowed up by darkness.
When Nate opened his eyes again, he was greeted by an unfamiliar sight: lush green hills stretching out as far as he could see under a clear blue sky. He sat up slowly and looked around, taking in his new surroundings.
"Chloe?" he called out tentatively.
"I'm here," came his sister's voice from behind him.
He turned to see her emerging from the same patch of darkness that had swallowed them moments before. She brushed the dirt off her jeans and looked around in awe.
"Where are we?" she wondered aloud.
Before Nate could respond, a voice called out to them from a nearby hilltop. "Ahoy there! Who goes there?"
They turned to see a man in elaborate pirate attire making his way down the hill towards them. His long coat billowed in the wind, and a feathered hat sat jauntily atop his head.
Nate and Chloe exchanged bewildered glances as the man approached, a wide grin on his face. "I say, you two are a sight for sore eyes! I thought I was the only one who knew about this portal."
"Portal?" Nate repeated, his brow furrowing in confusion.
The man nodded enthusiastically. "Aye, this be a portal to another dimension, my young friends. A world where Sir Francis Drake is alive and well!"
Nate's jaw dropped, and Chloe's eyes widened in disbelief. They had studied Sir Francis Drake extensively in school - he was one of their favorite historical figures.
"But... how is that possible?" Chloe stammered.
The man shrugged nonchalantly. "Pirates don't concern themselves with such trivial matters as time and space," he said with a wink. "The name's Captain Jack Sparrow, by the way."
Nate and Chloe introduced themselves, still trying to process what was happening. Before they could ask any more questions, Captain Jack Sparrow clapped them both on the back.
"Well then, mates," he said with a mischievous smile. "Shall we go pay ol' Francis a visit? I'm sure he'll be thrilled to meet you."
And with that, he set off up the hill, leaving Nate and Chloe to scramble after him.
