The Whispering Cat

"And that's how the Magical Cat saved the world," Grandma said, closing the storybook on her lap.
Lucy looked up at her with wide eyes. "Really, Grandma? The Magical Cat saved the whole world?"
"Mm-hmm," Grandma nodded. "One paw step at a time."
Lucy grinned. "That's amazing! I wish I had a Magical Cat to help me save things."
Grandma smiled and ruffled Lucy's hair. "Oh, darling. You don't need a Magical Cat to be a hero. Remember, heroes come in all shapes and sizes."
Lucy thought about this for a moment before deciding she liked the idea of being a hero without needing any magical help.
"Are you ready for bed now, sweetie?" Grandma asked.
Lucy nodded and climbed out of her grandmother's lap. She followed her into the bedroom and crawled under the covers.
Once she was settled, Grandma leaned down to give her a kiss goodnight.
"Remember what I said about heroes," she whispered before turning off the light and pulling the door closed behind her.
As Lucy lay in bed, waiting for sleep to come, she couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to be a hero like the Magical Cat from Grandma's story.
Just as sleep was starting to creep closer, Lucy heard something strange coming from outside her window - scratching claws and muffled meowing sounds.
Curiosity piqued, Lucy threw back the covers and tiptoed across her room. She slowly pushed open her curtains to see what was making all that noise on her windowsill.
Her eyes went wide when she saw who it was - standing there in all its magical glory was an orange tabby cat with golden eyes staring up at her expectantly.
"Are...are you a Magical Cat?" Lucy whispered in awe.
The cat gave an impatient meow as if he were saying 'Of course, I am. Now let me in.'
Lucy quickly unlatched her window and swung it open. The Magical Cat jumped inside and strutted confidently into the middle of the room.
Once he was settled, he turned his golden eyes on Lucy as if awaiting further instructions.
"I...uh," Lucy stammered. "I'm not sure what to do now."
The cat gave an exasperated sigh before shaking its head and pawing at the ground in front of him.
As Lucy watched, a small circle formed on the carpet beneath the cat's paw. Within seconds, the circle had grown bigger and bigger until it was large enough for both of them to step through.
Lucy stared at the hole in her carpet with wide eyes before glancing back up at the cat.
"You want me to go through there?" she asked hesitantly.
The cat nodded once before sitting down on its haunches and looking up at her expectantly.
Heart pounding with excitement, Lucy took a deep breath and stepped into the swirling portal. She was surprised when instead of falling suddenly like she had expected; she landed on solid ground moments later.
When she looked around, she gasped in astonishment - they were no longer in her bedroom but standing outside a mythical-looking castle!
"Wow," Lucy breathed. "This place is amazing!"
She spun around in a circle, taking it all in - blue skies dotted with fluffy white clouds stretched out as far as she could see while rolling green hills led up to a towering fortress made entirely of glass.
Before Lucy could take another step or even touch one blade of grass from the paradise before her, loud shouting broke through the dreamlike state this magical world put upon her senses only for fear to set in instead.
