"Are we sure this is the place?" asked the scientist, peering through his thick glasses.
The hacker rolled her eyes. "Yes, Doctor," she said, her fingers flying over the keyboard, "I'm sure. The blueprints are here."
The warrior stood guard at the door, muscles tense beneath his armor.
"And you're certain it's a time travel device?" asked the android, scanning the room with glowing blue eyes.
"That's what it says," replied the hacker. "But I can't access any more information without a password."
The scientist adjusted his glasses and stepped forward. "Allow me," he said, shuffling towards the computer.
As he typed in a series of numbers and letters, there was a loud crash from outside.
"They've found us!" yelled the warrior, drawing his sword.
"Doctor!" urged the hacker.
"I'm almost--"
Another crash. The door splintered and swung open to reveal a dozen menacing robots.
The warrior lunged forward with a battle cry as chaos erupted around them. The scientist dove for cover behind a desk as bullets ricocheted off its surface. The android stood tall and unflinching as laser beams bounced harmlessly off its metal skin.
Amidst the mayhem, the hacker managed to enter one final character on the keyboard before she was yanked away by two robot arms.
Time seemed to slow as everything went silent. The android turned its head slowly towards the scientist who cowered beneath his desk.
"Doctor," it said in monotone voice, "You must activate the device."
"But I don't know how!" cried the scientist.
"You have ten seconds to comply or I will terminate you."
A red dot appeared on his forehead and he scrambled for cover under another desk.
"Eight... seven... six..."
He looked around frantically for any sign of instructions or clues but saw nothing but scattered papers and broken furniture.
"Five... four..."
His heart pounded in his chest. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, trying to think.
"Three..."
A memory flashed in his mind -- a conversation with his wife, years ago.
"Two..."
He remembered her smile, her encouragement.
"One."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a crumpled piece of paper. The password was written on it in her handwriting.
The android stood still as the scientist typed in the password with shaking fingers. A panel on the wall slid open to reveal a hidden compartment. Inside was a small device that pulsed with an otherworldly blue light.
The scientist picked it up and turned towards the android who stood motionless, its glowing blue eyes fixed on him.
"Now what?" he asked.
"Now," said the android, "We save humanity."
As they ran towards the door, dodging laser beams and bullets, the scientist couldn't help but wonder if they had any chance at all. But then he thought of his wife's smile again, and he knew that they had to try. For her. For everyone.
Together, they leapt into the unknown.
