Halo 3 and the Power of Redemption
·
Published 3/23/2023In a divided and dangerous third century Africa, a young and courageous Halo 3 fan, Peninic, must rely on their faith in the video game and its characters to unite their people against moral conventions and religious intolerance - no matter the odds.
It was well past midnight. The chirping of crickets and croaking of frogs were drowned out by the thunderous screams and shrieks of a thousand invaders. It was an invasion unlike any other. One that wasn't led by the likes of Hannibal or Genghis Khan, but by one man - Master Chief himself. And he would lead his army to victory.
The invaders streamed down the river, burning everything they came across. The burning cottages, farms, and plowed fields provided light in the darkness, allowing them to see their way through the winding paths of the forest. This was their land now; they would do with it as they pleased. It didn't matter who lived here before them. All that mattered was that they had won the war and now it was time to reap the rewards.
"We're running outta space!" yelled a soldier, clutching onto a large backpack filled with what few valuables he could carry from his former home. "They'll be here any minute!" he added, eyes wide with fear.
"Keep moving!" shouted an officer at the head of the pack as he moved forward into the new territory, smoke and embers behind him. His armor had been painted in red ochre - a symbol often used by Hannibal's forces to intimidate enemies into submission before battle even began.
"The river bends up ahead! We'll make camp there!" he said louder this time, attempting to instill confidence into those around him. He knew that if they stopped now, even for just a moment, they'd be overrun by their enemies. But many were too afraid to move on through the hot jungle night; instead choosing to stop and rest among what remained of their old homes and farms.
"No! We keep moving! They're not far behind us!"
But it was too late; hundreds of enemy soldiers had flanked them from one side of the path while dozens more blocked their only escape route on the other end of the road. They were trapped between two enemy camps with nowhere to run but forward - deeper into enemy territory where they'd have no food or shelter until they surrendered to their conquerors.
It was over before it began; all that remained was for these men to accept their fate and surrender peacefully or suffer a quick death at their enemies' hands before being left dead in the jungle surrounded by nothing but miles and miles of black forest and burning fields. They would die either way; there was no point in fighting against such overwhelming odds. Better to live another day than get themselves killed here today like fools who don't know when it's time to cut their losses and run home with their heads held high rather than standing tall for an impossible cause like this one.
"I'm gonna stand my ground," said another soldier as he removed his helmet and placed it on his armored chestplate clumsily despite years of training under harsher conditions than this one.
"You've got enough sense not to throw your life away," replied his friend as he removed his own helmet and wiped away some sweat from his brows with a dirty rag as he breathed heavily from exhaustion after running for who knows how many hours straight through heavy heat without any water or food beforehand.
