"Hey, Alex! Wait up!"

Alex turned around to see his best friend, Max, running toward him. Max was a tall, lanky boy with messy brown hair and a perpetual grin on his face.

"What's up, Max?" Alex asked as his friend caught up to him.

"Guess what? I made the basketball team!" Max exclaimed.

"That's awesome, Max! I knew you would make it," Alex said, genuinely happy for his friend.

"Yeah, thanks. It's all because of your help and encouragement," Max replied.

Alex smiled and punched Max lightly on the shoulder. "Nah, you did all the hard work. I just cheered you on."

Max looked at Alex seriously. "You know, you should try out for a sport too. You're really fast and agile. I bet you'd be great at track or soccer."

Alex shrugged. "I don't know, sports just aren't really my thing."

Max frowned. "Come on, Alex. It's important to try new things and find something you enjoy doing."

Alex sighed and nodded. "Yeah, I guess you're right."

"Great! We can go together to sign up for track tryouts after school," Max said excitedly.

"Okay," Alex agreed reluctantly.

As they walked into their first-period class together, Alex couldn't help but feel a mix of nerves and anticipation about trying out for track later that day.

The sun was shining brightly as Alex stood at the edge of the track field after school with Max by his side. There were other students scattered around warming up or talking in groups.

"Are you ready for this?" Max asked eagerly.

"I guess so," Alex replied nervously.

Just then, Coach Johnson blew a whistle from the center of the field, grabbing everyone's attention.

"Alright everyone, gather round!" Coach Johnson called out.

The students quickly made their way to the coach, forming a semi-circle around him.

"I'm Coach Johnson, and I'll be running the track team this year," he introduced himself. "I'm looking for athletes who are dedicated, hardworking, and have a passion for running."

Alex listened intently as Coach Johnson explained the tryout process and what would be expected of them if they made the team.

"Alright, let's get started with some warm-ups," Coach Johnson said.

The students began stretching and jogging in place, preparing their bodies for the upcoming tryouts. Alex followed along, trying to shake off his nerves and focus on doing his best.

After warm-ups were complete, Coach Johnson divided the students into smaller groups based on their grade levels. Alex found himself in a group with Max and a few other freshmen.

The tryouts consisted of several running drills and timed sprints. Alex pushed himself to run as fast as he could, feeling the burn in his legs but determined to show his potential.

As the tryouts came to an end, Alex stood alongside his fellow teammates-in-the-making, panting and sweaty. He couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment for giving it his all.

Coach Johnson gathered everyone back together before announcing his final decision. He praised their efforts during the tryouts and encouraged those who didn't make the team not to give up on pursuing their athletic passions.

"And now, without further ado," Coach Johnson said with a smile, "I'd like to congratulate these students for making this year's track team."

A wave of anticipation swept through Alex as he waited to hear if his name would be called. Finally, Coach Johnson spoke up.

"Congratulations to Max Smith," he announced first. Alex clapped enthusiastically for his friend.

"And also making the team is..." Coach Johnson paused dramatically. "Alex Williams!"

A mixture of shock and excitement rushed through Alex at hearing his own name. Max slapped him on the back, grinning from ear to ear.

"See, I told you that you'd be great at this!" Max exclaimed.

Alex couldn't help but smile. Maybe trying something new and stepping out of his comfort zone wasn't such a bad idea after all.

The weeks flew by as Alex and Max settled into their routines as members of the track team. They had practice after school every day, running laps around the track, doing strength training exercises, and working on their speed and endurance.

Some days were harder than others, and there were times when Alex felt like giving up. But every time he thought about quitting, he remembered what his dad used to say:

"By experiencing both victory and defeat, running away and shedding tears, a man will become a man. It's okay to cry. But you have to move on."

Those words echoed in Alex's mind whenever he faced challenges or setbacks. He knew that success wouldn't come easily, but he was determined to push through the difficulties and grow stronger as a result.

As the end of the season approached, it was finally time for Alex's first official track meet. His heart pounded in his chest as he stood at the starting line with his teammates.

Coach Johnson gave them some final words of encouragement before they took their positions.

"You've trained hard for this moment," Coach Johnson said. "Now go out there and give it your all. Show them what you're made of."

The starter raised his pistol into the air, ready to signal the start of the race. The tension in the air was palpable as Alex crouched down into position, focused on the task ahead.

BANG! The sound of the pistol rang loud in Alex's ears as he exploded off the starting line, legs pumping and lungs burning with each stride.

The world around him became a blur as he sprinted around the track, adrenaline coursing through his veins. He could hear the cheers and shouts from the crowd, but he blocked them out, concentrating on the race.

As he crossed the finish line, a mix of exhaustion and exhilaration washed over him. He looked up at the digital clock displaying his time: a new personal best.

Alex's heart swelled with pride as he realized how far he had come since that first day of tryouts. He couldn't wait to share the news with his dad and hear him say those three simple words again:

"I'm proud of you."
