He looked at her again. He had been looking at her all day long. He always looked at her, but today he may have been staring a little too much.

“William?” She said, “Are you okay? You look like you’ve just seen a ghost.”

His face flushed and turned bright red. “Oh! I…I just thought of something funny, is all.” His laugh was nervous and stuttering. It was an obvious lie.

She knew it was a lie. She knew he had been staring at her all day long, even though she didn't know why because she couldn't tell what he was looking for or if there were anything wrong with her. What kind of look is that? What do you see when you look at me? But she didn't say anything because she wanted to let him keep looking at her as long as possible before he had to go home tonight. She knew that sooner or later he would have to leave and she wouldn't see him again until tomorrow morning when they would both be in the lab together working on their experiment together, but for now she would let him stare as much as he wanted because it made her feel good about herself, about how she felt when he looked at her so intently. She wasn't sure why it made her feel good, because she couldn't put it into words, but that didn't bother her; she just enjoyed the feeling.

He kept looking at her and thinking about how beautiful she was and how wonderful it was that they lived in this time where people could live freely with whomever they wanted to be with without being judged for who they loved. He had never been able to imagine a world like this back when he grew up watching the news reports on TV about gay people being beaten up in public parks by angry mobs of onlookers who thought they were sinners and demons who needed exorcising out of their lives by the hands of god himself, but now he lived in such a world and he relished every minute of it. He saw gay couples walking hand-in-hand down the street holding hands or kissing on the lips whenever he left his apartment in the morning or came back from work late at night; and while most of them kept their relationship private because they still feared prejudice from those who didn't accept them yet, there were some who embraced each other in public with nothing but love and happiness in their eyes - and sometimes even wore rings on their fingers to show other people that they were married to whomever they chose to marry no matter what anyone else said about it not being natural and against God's will - and William wished that one day all people everywhere could live like this openly without fear of retribution from anyone else who liked to think that their way of life was more right than any other person's way of life because "God" told them so personally through whatever holy book or religious leader told them so...but that could wait for another day; for now all William could do was smile inwardly while staring at Bella's angelic face as she worked diligently on their project together, working hard to make sure everything went smoothly so the experiment would end successfully without any hiccups whatsoever...
