"I'm telling you, there ain't nothing out there. Just rock and sand."

"You'd be the expert on that, wouldn't you?"

"I've been to the edge of the world. I've seen it for myself."

"I don't believe you. You're just some old man trying to scare us."

"Am not. I was a miner back in my day. I know the desert. It's... empty." The old man waved his hand around in the air, as if he were trying to erase something from existence. He had a glint in his eye that Erin could only describe as madness. "Empty and dead."

Erin couldn't help but roll her eyes at him. She knew that she should probably cut him some slack - after all, he was an old man - but she just couldn't help herself sometimes. When she stood up, everyone else in the room followed suit. In fact, they had been getting more and more restless as the conversation between her and the old man continued; maybe now they'll shut up and leave me alone for once she thought to herself, but then she noticed someone from the second row stand up, and another person from the third row follow suit, and suddenly everyone in the bar was on their feet. They began murmuring amongst one another, each one forming their own group with two or three others that they seemed to agree with most strongly. Erin sighed and ran a hand through her hair; maybe this time they'll actually listen to me when I tell them we're moving on today, she thought as she walked to the center of the room, standing on top of a table so that everyone could see her clearly. She took a deep breath before speaking again: "Listen up! We're moving out today!"

The entire bar went silent at her voice; they looked at her with wide eyes and open mouths, but nobody spoke or moved an inch. Finally somebody in one of the groups spoke up: "We can't go yet! We still haven't found everything we need!" Several others from his group nodded their heads like puppets; Erin sighed again; why did people always think that following rules meant stopping here? Even though they were supposed to make a temporary settlement to plan their next move for two weeks before continuing on towards the east coast of America, people always thought that meant setting up shop here for much longer than that. Well, if everybody is going to insist on staying for far too long anyway then I might as well get some supplies myself while everybody is busy fighting with one another over where exactly we should be setting up camp next Erin thought as she jumped down from her table and ducked out of the bar as quickly as possible without anyone noticing what she had done. Outside it was hot outside; even though it was only mid-afternoon in May Erin felt like she would melt right into the ground if she didn't find shelter soon enough. As she made her way towards their original spot in front of a large rock face further away from town, Erin took off her backpack and sat down on a boulder next to it; thankfully no one had ever bothered building anything out there so no one would have any reason to go bother her while she was taking a break. She reached into a side pocket of her pack and pulled out two oranges; luckily for her, some people were already starting to plant things wherever they were staying so Erin hadn't needed to steal these from town after all. As she bit into one of them gratefully, Erin couldn't help but wonder whether or not anyone would notice what she had done if they saw her take them; after all, no one else cared about eating food anymore since it was so hard to come by in the desert. Her thoughts were interrupted by someone calling out behind her: "What are you doing out here by yourself? You trying to get yourself killed?"

She turned around slowly; sure enough it was Michael, who usually served as 'security' whenever they moved campsites since he always insisted on carrying around his knife with him everywhere he went. He had been looking at Erin strangely ever since they left New York City together several months ago; at first he had tried flirting with her every chance he got – which was always – but eventually he settled for giving her strange looks whenever he saw her alone like this instead. Still though, despite how creepy Michael acted towards Erin she couldn't help but feel grateful towards him because without him none of this would have ever been possible – even though nobody else knew about it besides herself anymore anyway because Michael told everybody else that he was off hunting rabbits by himself when really he had helped sneak Erin out of town past all those police checkpoints set up by President Thomas himself when nobody else would risk helping her escape because nobody wants to be associated with treason after all especially when you're walking around with somebody who's been accused of being a terrorist. So when Michael asked if everything was okay, Erin attempted to suppress any annoyance she felt

and put on a smile. "Just taking a little break, you know how it is," she replied, tossing the second orange to Michael.

He caught it, his gaze lingering on her for a moment before he bit into the fruit. "Yeah, I get it. This whole journey can be exhausting."

Erin nodded, relieved that he didn't press further. Their friendship had always been a delicate balance of trust and secrets, and she didn't want to risk revealing too much. As she watched him eat the orange, her thoughts drifted back to the conversation in the bar. Maybe she could use this opportunity to convince Michael of their need to move on, to leave this barren wasteland behind and search for a better life elsewhere.

"You know, Michael, I've been thinking," Erin said, choosing her words carefully. "We've been here for weeks, and we haven't found anything substantial. It's time to move on, to keep searching for that place where we can truly start over."

Michael finished the orange and wiped his hands on his pants. He stared out at the vast expanse of desert, lost in thought. Finally, he turned to Erin, his expression serious. "You really think there's something out there? Something better than this?"

Erin nodded. "I believe there's more to this world than what we've seen. We have to keep searching, keep pushing forward. We can't let fear hold us back."

Michael sighed, his eyes filled with a mixture of longing and uncertainty. "You always were the adventurous one, Erin. I guess that's what I've always admired about you."

Erin smiled warmly. "We can't do this alone, Michael. We need everyone to be on board. Will you help me convince them to move on?"

He hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Yeah, I will. I'll talk to the others, but I can't promise they'll all agree."

"I understand," Erin said, grateful for his support. "We just have to try."

With a new determination in their hearts, Erin and Michael returned to the makeshift camp together. They gathered the others, one by one, explaining their plan and painting a picture of hope and possibility. Some were skeptical, clinging to the familiarity of their current surroundings, while others were more open to the idea of continuing their journey. It was a slow and arduous process, but they slowly gained support from those willing to take the risk.

As the days passed, the camp buzzed with a newfound energy. People began packing their belongings, preparing for the next leg of their journey. Erin couldn't help but feel a sense of pride as she watched the camp come to life. They were no longer a group of weary survivors; they were pioneers, driven by a shared vision.

Finally, the day arrived to set off. The sun bathed the desert in a warm glow, igniting a sense of anticipation in the air. The group gathered at the edge of their camp, ready to embark on their next adventure. Erin stood beside Michael, their eyes meeting for a brief moment before they turned their attention to the vast unknown that lay before them.

"Are you ready?" Michael asked, his voice filled with a mix of excitement and nervousness.

Erin took a deep breath, feeling the weight of responsibility resting on her shoulders. "I've never been more ready," she replied, her voice steady. "Let's go, Michael. Let's see what lies beyond the edge of the world."

And as they took their first steps into the endless desert, Erin couldn't help but believe that there was something out there, something waiting to be discovered. With each passing day, the barren landscape became a canvas upon which hope and determination painted a new beginning. And even though they faced countless challenges and uncertainties, together, they knew they had the power to turn the empty and dead into a world filled with life and possibility.
