Twinning the Presidency
·
Published 3/2/2023After their teacher Ms. Peters propositions Andy and Cameron, two fiercely ambitious twelve-year-olds from Fairfield, with an election for class president, the twins embark on a thrilling campaign that leaves them both surprisingly victorious – and the school in a state of hilarious chaos.
I'm at my desk, looking out the window. The classroom is starting to get noisy as the students begin to chatter amongst themselves. It's the last period of the day, and I can't wait for it to be over.
"Everyone! Please settle down!" Ms. Peters calls for attention. "I'd like you all to meet our two class presidents!"
Everyone looks back at Ms. Peters with a mixture of curiosity and annoyance. They don't know what she's talking about, but they don't want to miss out on anything interesting.
"We have a very unusual situation today," Ms. Peters continues, "because we have two class presidents."
The class goes silent again as everyone tries to make sense of what Ms. Peters just said. Two class presidents? How could that even happen? Did one student learn multiple languages in a single day or something? Did someone win two separate competitions? Did one student get caught cheating and the other didn't? Are they going to double-vote on everything? What's going on?!
Ms. Peters gives them a moment before explaining further: "When Mr. Smith retired last year, he named Andy as his successor." Everyone turns their heads towards me, with some showing surprise and others just blankly acknowledging my presence. "Of course, when Mr. Smith left for retirement, we never expected him to stay away for so long! But now he's back!"
Everyone turns their heads towards the door, which slowly opens up to reveal an elderly man with thinning grey hair and glasses that are too big for his face. He limps into the room with a cane held under his arm and walks up to the front of the room, next to Ms. Peters. I jump out of my seat and rush over to help him, taking his cane from him and sliding it under his arm so he has both hands free to shake hands with people in the front row nearest him.
"Thank you," he says, smiling warmly as he shakes hands with various students. "It's good to be back, though I wish it wasn't under such circumstances." He takes a deep breath before continuing: "Cameron is also our class president right now."
The whole class stares at me and whispers among themselves once again at this revelation: Cameron is class president?! What happened?! Is he really that much better than me?! Was there a vote?!
Ms. Peters clears her throat before saying: "Ahem! As I was saying, Andy is one of our two current class presidents." She casts a glance at Mr. Smith before turning back towards me and asking: "Would you like to explain how this happened?"
