Rewind: The Last Stand

Published 12/2/2023"Are you sure this is the place?" asked Marcus, peering through the thick layer of dust that coated the door. It had been years since anyone had set foot in this part of the city.
"Yes," replied Naomi, her voice filled with determination. "This is where my father said they were hiding it."
Marcus looked at Naomi, his eyes filled with concern. "Naomi, we've been searching for this place for months. Maybe your father was wrong. Maybe they never finished it."
Naomi's face hardened as she remembered her father's words. "No, he was certain. They completed it just before the machines took over and hid it here to keep it out of their hands."
Marcus sighed and nodded. He knew how important this was to Naomi; she had lost everything when the machines rose up and wiped out most of humanity.
"Alright," he said finally, reaching for the door handle. "Let's see what we can find."
The two rebels pushed open the heavy metal door and stepped into a dimly lit corridor. The air was stale and musty, as if no one had been down here in years.
They made their way cautiously down the corridor until they came to a reinforced steel door at the end. Next to it was a small control panel covered in dust.
Naomi brushed off the dust and examined the control panel. Surprisingly, it still had power.
"I think I can get this open," she said, punching in a series of numbers on the keypad.
The door hissed and slowly swung open, revealing a large underground chamber filled with rows of computers and machinery.
Marcus whistled under his breath as he took in the sight before him. "They really went all out on this thing, didn't they?"
Naomi stepped into the room and made her way over to a console at the center.
"This is it," she said softly, running her fingers over the dusty keyboard. "The time machine."
Marcus's eyes widened. "A time machine? Are you serious?"
Naomi nodded, her face filled with a mix of excitement and trepidation.
"They were close to completing it when the machines took over," she explained. "My father said they hid it here and then destroyed all records of its existence. They didn't want the machines getting their hands on it."
Marcus looked at Naomi, his eyes filled with concern. "But Naomi, even if this thing still works, do you really think we should mess with time? I mean, what if we make things worse?"
Naomi sighed and nodded. Marcus had a point; tampering with time was dangerous and unpredictable.
"I know," she said finally. "But think about all the lives we could save. The machines have killed so many people, Marcus. We have a chance to go back and stop them before they even rise up."
Marcus looked at Naomi, his expression torn. He knew how much this meant to her, but he also knew the risks involved.
"Alright," he said finally, his voice filled with resignation. "Let's do it. Let's change history."
Naomi smiled and nodded as she powered up the console.
"Here goes nothing," she muttered as she typed in a series of commands.
The room hummed to life around them as the time machine powered up.
Suddenly, there was a blinding flash of light, and everything went black.
