The air was thick with the smell of blood and burning metal. The hard soil was cracked and dry, a result of the harsh suns.

The Great War had been raging for centuries, first in the south, then gradually moving north and now it was here, on my home planet. My home planet, where I had toiled for the last 14 years of my life, working on the fields with my mother and father. I have never seen war up close before. I had never been allowed outside our village, and after all these years I had never thought that I ever would. But when you're caught in a crossfire between two legions of fighting soldiers, as bullets whizzed past you, you start to regret those decisions that you made.

"Run!" My father screamed as he grabbed me by the arm and started to drag me across the field while bullets tore at our backsides. Our village is small and there is less than 20 people left alive right now. We are currently hiding behind a large rock nearby the forest, our nearest sanctuary. A few others were also there along with us, panting heavily as they too tried to calm their hearts down from the adrenaline rush of almost being killed. The sand started to kick up from further away from us, indicating that someone or something was approaching us. My father whipped around frantically and grabbed a large rifle from his back. He held it up high and began aiming it towards whatever was coming our way.

"Stay down!" He whispered loudly as he leaned over to peek out just above the rock's edge. He was shaking slightly as he took deep breaths before suddenly standing up to shoot whatever was coming our way. The bullet flew through the air as I looked on in horror as an orange figure fell forward onto the ground with a loud thud not 10 meters away from us. He dropped his rifle immediately afterwards and clutched onto his chest while tears streamed down his face in sorrowful wails. It was one of our neighbors from our village who we had just ran into earlier this morning before this madness started happening! The gunshot echoed through the rocky hills surrounding us as I could hear faint screams of pain far off beyond the hills in different directions where other people were shot down like my neighbor here today.

"You killed him!" I yelled at my father who was still staring out onto the field with tears streaming down his face in sadness and shock of what he had done in self-defense against an enemy that was not even visible yet to us due to how far away they were shooting at us from. He dropped his head down onto his chest as he shook slowly back and forth while trying to catch his breath again after running away from our village which is now swarming with enemy soldiers who burned it down earlier today after invading our world out of nowhere! How did this happen? What do we do next? Where do we go? Questions flooded through my head like waterfalls washing away all my thoughts about what I should be doing right now instead of contemplating about things that I cannot change at this moment such as how we got here or if we will ever get out of here alive!
