Zoidberg's Country Coral Farm
·
Published 11/14/2023"Good news, everyone!" Professor Farnsworth called out from the Planet Express conference room. "We've just been awarded a government contract to deliver a package to the moon!"
The crew of Planet Express groaned in unison.
"Oh, come on," Fry complained. "I thought we were done with space deliveries."
"Technically, the moon is not in space," the Professor corrected him. "It's in... uh... I forget. Anyway, it's an easy delivery and it pays well."
"I guess that's good news," Leela said, trying to sound optimistic.
"Great! Let's get going!" Bender shouted as he headed for the ship.
The crew boarded the Planet Express ship and took their places. As they prepared for takeoff, Zoidberg noticed something shiny out of the corner of his eye.
"What's this?" he asked as he picked up a small diamond from the floor.
"A diamond? How did that get here?" Amy wondered.
"It must have fallen out of someone's pocket," Leela suggested.
"Well, it looks like nobody is claiming it," Zoidberg said as he put the diamond in his pocket. "So I will keep it."
The crew shrugged and continued their preparations for takeoff. The Planet Express ship launched into the sky and made its way toward the moon.
After a smooth journey, they landed on the lunar surface and delivered their package. As they were preparing to return to Earth, Zoidberg noticed something else shiny on the ground.
"Another diamond!" he exclaimed. "This is my lucky day!"
Zoidberg picked up the diamond and put it in his pocket with the first one. The crew didn't think much of it and soon they were on their way back to Earth.
Back at Planet Express headquarters, Zoidberg couldn't stop thinking about his newfound wealth.
"I am rich! Richer than any of you!" he declared.
"Uh, Zoidberg, I hate to break it to you," Bender said, "but two diamonds are not exactly a fortune."
"Oh, but you don't understand," Zoidberg explained. "I have a plan. With these two diamonds as seed money, I will invest in the stock market and make even more money!"
The crew laughed at Zoidberg's ridiculous plan.
"Zoidberg, you don't know anything about the stock market," Leela pointed out.
"That's true," Amy agreed. "You're more likely to lose all your money than make any."
"But what if I don't?" Zoidberg asked. "What if I become rich and famous? Then you'll all be sorry!"
The crew continued to laugh as Zoidberg stormed out of the room. He went home and spent the rest of the day studying the stock market.
The next morning, Zoidberg used his two diamonds as collateral for a loan from a shady loan shark named Sal. With his newly acquired cash, he bought shares in several companies that he thought were sure to succeed.
Over the next few weeks, Zoidberg watched as the value of his stocks skyrocketed. He was making money hand over fist and couldn't believe his luck.
"I am a genius!" he declared. "I am going to be rich!"
But then, just as quickly as they had gone up, the prices of Zoidberg's stocks started to plummet. Panicking, he sold off his shares at a loss and tried to cut his losses.
But it was too late. The diamond-backed loans came due and Zoidberg didn't have enough money to pay them back.
"You're in deep water now, crabby!" Sal growled. "If you don't pay up by tomorrow, I'm gonna break your claws!"
Zoidberg knew he had to come up with a plan, and fast. He thought about borrowing more money, but he knew that would only make things worse.
Then he remembered something he had read in the stock market news. The price of coral was skyrocketing due to a shortage caused by overfishing.
"I've got it!" Zoidberg exclaimed. "I'll become a coral farmer! I'll grow my own coral and sell it for a fortune!"
Zoidberg used the last of his money to buy a rundown ranch in the countryside. He converted the land into a coral farm and spent all his time tending to his crops.
After several months of hard work, Zoidberg's corals were ready to harvest. He loaded them onto the Planet Express ship and set off for the market.
To his surprise, Zoidberg found that there was indeed a shortage of coral, just as he had read. Buyers were willing to pay top dollar for his corals, and Zoidberg made enough money to pay off his debts with plenty to spare.
"I did it! I'm rich!" Zoidberg exclaimed.
With his newfound wealth, Zoidberg paid off Sal and returned to Planet Express headquarters. The crew couldn't believe their eyes when they saw him.
"Zoidberg? Is that really you?" Fry asked.
"It is I, Dr. John A. Zoidberg, millionaire!" Zoidberg declared.
The crew congratulated Zoidberg on his success and asked him how he did it.
"It's simple," Zoidberg explained. "I found two diamonds in the dumpster, invested in the stock market, lost all my money, borrowed more money from Sal, couldn't pay him back, so I became a coral farmer."
The crew stared at him in disbelief.
"Uh... okay," Leela said finally. "Well, congratulations anyway."
"Yeah," Bender agreed. "But don't think this means I'm gonna start being nice to you."
Zoidberg shrugged and went back to work. He may not have earned his fortune the conventional way, but he was proud of what he had accomplished.
And as he tended to his corals, Zoidberg couldn't help but wonder what other treasures might be hiding in the dumpster.
