"It's a new day, Cali."
"Yes, Mother. A good day." I chirped out an answer before even opening my eyes.
Mother let out a laugh, followed by a long sigh. The sound of her breathing was comforting and put me in mind of the days when she would hold me close to her and rock me like a baby. Those days were long gone now. So was the warmth of the sun on my face as I lay in our tiny garden home. The sky was darkening as the first signs of night began to appear.
"You're right, dear. It is a new day. A beautiful one at that! But we need to get moving if you want to start your journey today." Mother's voice sounded tired but determined, like it always did these days.
"I know, Mother. I've been up for hours!" My legs swung off my cot and I ran over to my dresser where I grabbed my clothes for the day. "I'm going to travel today! You'll see! I'll go so far that no one will be able to find me! Ever!" I shouted out as I put on my clothes and carefully tucked away all of the precious trinkets that had been given to me over the years into my small backpack. "What do you think about that?"
Mother didn't say anything but I could hear her stifled laughter from where she was crouched over our cooking pot putting together my travel meal for me. She would give me some bread and dried fruit wrapped up in some boiled leaves that she had sealed with sap from our trees earlier this morning. Her fingers were stained with black soot from our wood stove as she went about preparing my food for the day ahead of me. She was always busy with something or other these days but I was used to it by now and didn't mind helping her out whenever she needed it anymore. That was just how things worked around here after all! Everyone helped everyone else, especially those who couldn't help themselves! That's why we have the Way of Life!, I thought proudly to myself as I finished getting dressed and went over to where Mother was cooking for me.
When we lived in Aurelia, many people took care of us there but this wasn't like that at all! We lived alone here in this small hut with only each other for company most days! Sometimes Grandpa would come by with his stories from back in the Old Days before he got sick and had to leave us behind but mostly it was just Mother and me here together doing what we could just to survive each day! But that's what living on Novara is all about! If we don't help each other out then who will? That's why we have the Way of Life!, I thought once more before taking up my backpack and giving Mother a kiss on her cheek as best as I could through her soot-stained hands. "See you later today!"
* * *
I walked through the forest until I came upon the clearing where Grandpa told us once lived a group of people called Them That Walked Among Us*. They were different from us though he hadn't said how exactly because he didn't want Mom getting upset again when he talked about them being long gone now and not a threat anymore. He also told us how lucky we were because many groups like them had tried to take over Novara when they arrived but they couldn't because of all the rivers flowing everywhere here! And everyone knows rivers are hard to cross without boats like those that floated above us in the sky when they first came here hundreds of years ago! Now those people live above us instead fighting amongst themselves while we live down here below ground where no one can bother us anymore because they think we're dead or something up there in Aurelia! Maybe they're right too! We don't go above ground much anymore anyway since... Since... Since... Before... Before... Things changed!, I thought as memories of past events rushed back into my mind almost faster than I could keep up with them all swirling around inside my head until finally settling on one big event that made everything else seem so much worse afterwards: The Bad Ones*.
The Bad Ones had come to our village, wreaking havoc and causing panic amongst the people. They wore dark, tattered clothing and had a wild, feral look in their eyes. They didn't speak our language and communicated with guttural noises and sharp gestures. They had weapons, sharp and gleaming, and they used them without mercy. They tore through the village, burning huts, taking whatever they pleased, and leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.
I remember that day vividly, as it was the day I saw fear in my mother's eyes for the first time. I was hiding in the forest, watching the chaos unfold from a distance. My heart pounded in my chest, and tears welled up in my eyes as I saw our small, humble abode go up in flames. But what struck me the hardest was the bravery and resilience of the people around me.
They fought back.
Men and women, young and old, came together to defend what little we had left. They knew the odds were against them, but they refused to yield. The sound of clashing weapons echoed through the trees, mingling with anguished cries and defiant roars. The Bad Ones were strong and vicious, but our people were fueled by a desire to protect their loved ones and their way of life.
It was a fierce battle, but eventually, the Bad Ones were outnumbered and outmatched. They fled, leaving behind a shattered village and broken spirits. We mourned our losses, but we also celebrated our victory. We rebuilt our homes, stronger and more resilient than before, vowing to never let such darkness take hold of us again.
I stood there in the clearing, reflecting on that fateful day, as the sun dipped below the horizon. The serene beauty of the twilight painted the landscape in shades of purple and gold. I took a deep breath, inhaling the aroma of the forest, and felt a sense of calm wash over me. It was in this moment that a new purpose awakened within me. I knew I had to do more than survive; I had to help rebuild and restore our community.
With newfound determination, I turned away from the clearing and headed back towards our village. The way ahead was uncertain, and challenges awaited me, but I was ready to face them head-on. I knew that the strength of our collective spirit and the Way of Life would guide me, just as it had guided us through the darkest of times.
As I walked, I couldn't help but think about the stories Grandpa used to share. He spoke of a time when the people of Novara lived in harmony, both with each other and with nature. He spoke of a future where peace and unity would prevail. Now, it was up to my generation to carry the torch and make those stories a reality.
The path back to the village was treacherous, but I pressed on, fueled by hope and a sense of duty. I knew there would be obstacles along the way, but the strength and resilience I had witnessed in my fellow Novarians gave me unwavering resolve. And as I stepped back into the welcoming warmth of our community, I knew that I was not alone. Together, we would rise from the ashes and build a brighter future, a future where our history would not be defined by the tragedies we had endured but by our capacity to overcome them.
The journey ahead would not be easy, but I embraced the challenge with open arms. As I looked around at the familiar faces of my friends and neighbors, their smiles mirrored my own determination. We were Novarians, and together, we would shape our destiny, walking the path paved by our ancestors, and leading the way towards a renewed era of peace and prosperity on Novara.
It was a new day for Novarians—a new day filled with hope, resilience, and a burning desire to restore what had been lost. As night fell over the village, lanterns lit up the streets, casting a warm glow that symbolized our unwavering spirit. And as I stood amidst my people, I knew that our journey had just begun. The challenges may have been great, but so were our hearts and our unyielding belief in a better tomorrow.
With each step, we would prove that even in the face of darkness, the light of resilience and community would always prevail. Novara would rise again, and together, we would create a future that honored our past, embraced our present, and paved the way for generations yet to come.
