Guan and the Magical Desserts
·
Published 4/17/2023After accidentally transforming the food of China's Han Dynasty into dessert with magical ink, the widowed son of a calligrapher must enlist a wise mystic and loyal warrior's help to reverse the drastic consequences of his negligence and save their homeland, learning valuable lessons of truth and patriotism along the way.

Guan had never been one for desserts. He preferred to keep the ink in his brush separate from the food on his plate.
But here he was, covered with chocolate, cream and syrup, still trying to clean off the dripping liquid that had seeped into his clothes and hair.
He looked over at the rest of the family. Mother was already bouncing with excitement as she ate her bowl of rice, a small spot of red ink on her cheek. Father had an arm around Uncle Liu, and they were sharing some joke while they ate. Uncle Zhen was grinning and nodding as he ate his own dessert. Even Auntie was smiling happily, although she was a little more reserved than the rest of them.
"So this is what it means to be a son of Guan." Guan said to himself as he began to eat his own dessert. It didn't taste as good as he'd hoped it would be. He knew that it wasn't really bad; it just wasn't what he expected it to be like. He was used to eating foods more... savory than this. But even so, after two bowls he felt full and satisfied beyond measure. A layer of warm fuzziness descended upon him like a blanket, and before long he fell asleep.
Guan's dreams were strange that night. Incredibly vivid, with bizarre images floating through his head like clouds on a windy day. The landscapes were odd as well; some places seemed vaguely familiar, yet not quite right at the same time. He could hear people talking in a language he couldn't understand, but which sounded oddly familiar nonetheless—like an old friend who has been away for many years but who you can still recognize instantly when you see them again.
He woke up early the next morning feeling refreshed and energetic—the best way he'd slept in weeks! The previous night's feast must've done him a world of good! He got dressed quickly, then went downstairs to find something to eat for breakfast when something caught his eye...
Guan walked over to the table where last night's feast had taken place and noticed something strange about it immediately: there were no utensils or plates left lying around! Is Mother taking better care of her kitchen now that Father isn't around? Guan wondered silently as he picked up one of the bowls sitting on the table and took a sip out of it... only to have its contents slop onto the floor when an unexpected gust of breeze blew past him!
Guan set down the bowl on the table again but noticed it moving slightly when another breeze came along moments later—this time blowing into his face! Curiosity piqued, Guan walked out of the dining room and into the courtyard outside. He approached one of the potted trees in the garden, and a sudden gust of wind blew past him so hard that he found himself pushed back against another tree by its force!
Guan rubbed his arms where he'd been hit by branches from both trees and sighed aloud, puzzled by the strange behavior of the wind lately. Just then, he heard a loud *CRACK* nearby. Startled by the sound, Guan quickly turned around only to find several mysterious bowls sitting under a tree that hadn't been there before. The bowls trembled slightly, seemingly affected by the gusts of wind.
As Guan observed the bowls, another gust swept through, setting them spinning wildly around each other. Terrified, Guan watched them spin faster and faster until suddenly they crashed into each other with great force, shattering and sending shards flying throughout the courtyard. Amidst the wreckage, Guan noticed one intact bowl still sitting upright atop a large piece of wood. Intrigued, he opened the remaining bowl cautiously to find its interior walls covered in mysterious symbols, reminiscent of ancient writing.
Hoping for answers, Guan approached Uncle Liu's house. As he walked, another gust of wind blew past him, this time lifting various objects within the courtyard into the air. The fragments from the shattered bowls and other debris combined to form a sort of umbrella shape above Guan, spinning overhead like a giant fan whenever gusts appeared beneath it.
With a growing sense of unease, Guan continued towards Uncle Liu's house, determined to uncover the meaning behind the strange symbols and the mysterious happenings that had disturbed the peaceful tranquility of his home.
