“What’s this?”
The girl paused in front of an old wooden door she’d never seen before.
It stood alone in an alleyway behind her apartment building.
She reached out for it.
As soon as her fingers touched its surface it swung open.
She peered into the darkness beyond.
A cool breeze whispered through her hair.
Curiosity tugged at her like an itch she couldn’t scratch.
“Hello?”
Her voice swallowed by silence.
She stepped forward hesitantly then again more confidently until she was through the doorway and it closed behind her.
The girl squinted against bright sunlight reflecting off snow-covered ground beneath clear blue sky.
“Where am I?”
Snowflakes danced on air around her as she spun slowly taking in unfamiliar sights sounds scents sensations - trees taller than buildings mountains capped with white rivers rushing toward unknown destinations birdsong echoing from every direction pure crisp coldness filling every breath - until dizziness forced her to stop.
Steadying herself against nearest tree trunk she looked around again more carefully noting details - colorful flowers poking through snow here there everywhere; birds squirrels rabbits deer raccoons playing together; mountains dotted with tiny houses; trees covered in paintings drawings doodles graffiti; and - was that a fox?
It watched her intently then turned and trotted away.
“Wait!”
The girl ran after it.
Fox led her through forest along riverbank up mountainside until they stood before a door like the one she’d come through earlier.
“Is this another portal?”
Fox wagged its tail once then disappeared into thin air.
“Fox? Where did you go?”
No answer.
The girl reached out to touch the door but hesitated remembering what happened last time. She didn’t know where this door led or if she could return from wherever it went. But she had to try. She couldn’t stay here no matter how much she wanted to. Her family friends everyone she knew needed her. They lived in a world devoid of color beauty imagination creativity joy - everything this place offered. If only she could bring some of it back with her…
She pushed open the door and stepped through.
And found herself in an artist’s studio filled with paints brushes canvases sculptures sketches doodles.
She picked up sketchbook flipped through pages filled with drawings of people places things emotions ideas all so real so alive.
A single tear slipped down her cheek as realization hit: this was home - where she belonged - not that other place where everything felt dull lifeless flat.
She wiped away the tear smiling as inspiration welled up inside her bursting forth like fireworks on Fourth of July.
This is what I’ve been missing! This is who I am!
The girl spent hours immersed in creative frenzy until finally collapsing exhausted onto couch.
When she woke inventor stood over her examining his sketchbook.
“You’re back!” he said cheerfully without looking up from his work.
“Yes” the girl replied sitting up and stretching arms high above head “and full of ideas!”
Inventor grinned at her then turned back to his sketchbook.
“What are you working on?” she asked.
“Upgrade to portal” he replied “so it can be opened from other side.”
The girl’s heart sank.
“You mean I can’t go back?”
Inventor looked at her sympathetically.
“I’m afraid not” he said “at least not yet. But don’t worry! We’ll find a way to bring everyone here!”
He returned to his work humming tunelessly under his breath while the girl sat in silence contemplating what this meant.
She would never see her family friends again. They’d never know what they were missing - all the beauty color joy creativity imagination life that existed beyond their drab gray world. She couldn’t help feeling angry at them for keeping her trapped there without even realizing it. But then she remembered how she used to feel before coming here and knew they didn’t do it on purpose. They were just scared - like she was now - of the unknown of what might happen if they dared to step outside their comfort zone and embrace something different something new something real.
The girl stood up determinedly and walked over to inventor’s workbench where he hunched over his latest creation: a small metal box with buttons switches dials wires protruding from every side.
“What is it?” she asked curiously.
“Inspiration generator” inventor replied without looking up “to help people create things they’ve never imagined before.”
“That’s amazing!” the girl exclaimed “How does it work?”
Inventor shrugged.
“Not sure yet” he admitted “but I’m getting closer!”
He pointed at empty canvas propped against wall covered in paint splatters drips smears.
“Try it out!” he suggested enthusiastically “See what happens!”
The girl picked up paintbrush dipped into nearest color and began painting whatever came into her head - flowers birds mountains trees foxes rivers doorways people places things emotions ideas all so real so alive.
Inventor watched her with growing excitement as paintbrush moved faster and faster across canvas colors blending swirling mixing until finally she stepped back satisfied and they both stared in awe at what she’d created: a door like the one she’d come through earlier standing alone in an alleyway behind her apartment building.
“Can you do it again?” inventor asked eagerly “Create another one?”
The girl nodded confidently and began painting again brush flying furiously across canvas until finally she stepped back exhausted and they both stared in amazement at second door beside first identical in every way.
Inventor clapped his hands together excitedly.
“We did it!” he exclaimed “We can bring everyone here now!”
He grabbed first door by its handle and started dragging it toward second door.
“Help me!” he urged “Before inspiration fades!”
The girl picked up other door and dragged it to meet first then stood back as inventor fumbled with buttons switches dials wires on both doors until finally a loud whoosh filled the air and doors swung open revealing world of color beauty joy creativity imagination life beyond anything they’d ever dreamed possible.
They looked at each other grinning ear to ear then ran inside to share their discovery with everyone they knew.
And so artist’s studio became doorway between worlds allowing endless stream of people from gray world to explore experience embrace everything colorful beautiful joyful creative imaginative alive that lay waiting just on other side. And over time gray world transformed into vibrant kaleidoscope of ideas emotions expressions inspirations possibilities - all because one girl dared to imagine something different something new something real. And though she never saw her family friends again she knew wherever they were they were happy living lives full of color beauty joy creativity imagination life - just like hers.
