The job interview was over in a jiffy.
My interviewer was the (presumably) head of the company and he was sitting at his desk, staring at me with an odd grin on his face. I waited for him to say something but he didn't. He just kept staring. I started getting nervous and looked around the room, finally resting my gaze on a stuffed animal perched atop his filing cabinet. His eyes followed mine, "That's a Deinonychus," he said, pointing a finger at the stuffed toy, "It's native to North America."
He went on to explain how they had been found in prehistoric times, alongside dinosaurs. And how they were known as Velociraptors in the Jurassic Park movies, which apparently weren't quite accurate. It was quite the fascinating discussion and I was glad that he had brought it up. My eyes were starting to wander back towards the window then when I felt something brush against my leg. From the corner of my eye I saw a small furry creature with sharp teeth scampering away from me!
"Oh, that's Teddy!" he exclaimed and laughed heartily. The beast leapt onto his lap and started purring loudly, as if it were having a conversation with him. He scratched behind its ears absentmindedly while looking at me with a smile "Did you know Teddy was a kitten when we first got him?"
I gulped nervously, hoping he wasn't planning on showing me any more pets or else I would probably have to run out of this room screaming; and not because of Teddy either! Suddenly my interviewer broke into another fit of roaring laughter and I realized that he had said something funny.
"What?" I asked quietly, still wary of Teddy who continued to rub itself against his leg happily. He laughed even harder, struggling to catch his breath before speaking again "Did you really think I was going to offer you the job right away? That all you had to do was stare at my cat for ten minutes straight?"
I nodded sheepishly and he wiped tears from his eyes before continuing "No! Of course not! Your interview is over! You did great!"
So there it is - your biggest mistake ever! When you're applying for a job there are certain things that you should avoid doing, like losing your cool if you're asked about your high school years by some middle-aged man who is badmouthing millennials for fun; or staring at his pet cat for an entire ten minutes nonchalantly while he sits there silently watching you. Wait...you didn't do those things did you?
"Um..." I stammered nervously "...I've always wanted to work here?"
"Well," said my interviewer smiling benevolently "Why don't we go through everything now?"
"Sure!" I replied eagerly, hoping that by doing so everything would somehow magically get fixed up and then I would be able to walk away from this interview unscathed. Unfortunately, it wasn't so simple. On the contrary, it got worse.
I started explaining how I had gone to college because I wanted to learn more about computers - after all, that's what everyone wanted! But then Dad got sick and so Mom had to take over his business, which meant suddenly we needed money badly. We made enough money for a while, but then Mom got sick herself, and she couldn't keep working. The situation became difficult as medical expenses began piling up.
With my mom's passing, Dad resumed the family business, but he eventually fell into significant debt with loan sharks. They pressured him until he had no choice but to serve time in prison as an alternative to their violent threats. Left alone, I took over the family business, even though we faced more challenges, including a robbery attempt and feeling unsafe in our own community.
During this time, my friends helped me find temporary accommodation with their friend Samantha. We lived together for six months before she moved to Alaska to be with her boyfriend, at which point we gradually lost contact.
The purpose of sharing my story during this job interview was to demonstrate how despite the challenges I had faced, I remained resilient and determined in both my personal life and professional pursuits. Ultimately, I hoped that my experience would showcase my adaptability and determination, qualities I believed would make me a strong candidate for the position at hand.
My interviewer listened intently as I recounted the struggles I had faced, his expression shifting from amusement to genuine interest. He nodded solemnly, his eyes brimming with empathy. "I must say, I didn't expect such resilience from you," he said, his voice tinged with admiration. "You've been through a lot, and it takes a special kind of person to overcome such hardships."
I could sense a shift in the atmosphere of the room, the tension dissolving into a sense of understanding. My interviewer leaned forward, clasping his hands together on the desk. "Tell me, how do you think your experiences have shaped you as a person?" he asked, his gaze piercing yet compassionate.
I took a moment to gather my thoughts, reflecting on the lessons I had learned along the way. "I believe that every challenge I faced taught me the importance of resilience, adaptability, and the power of determination," I replied, my voice steady. "It taught me to believe in myself, to face adversity head-on, and to never give up. I've learned to find strength in the darkest of moments, pushing myself beyond my limits to achieve my goals."
A small smile played on the corner of the interviewer's lips. "You have an inspiring journey, indeed," he said, his tone filled with genuine appreciation. "And it seems that your experiences have equipped you with the qualities we value here at our company."
My heart leapt with renewed hope. Was I finally getting through to him? Could this interview turn around in my favor? I leaned in, eagerly anticipating his next words.
"But there's something else we value," he continued, his voice taking on a more somber note. "Empathy."
I blinked, momentarily taken aback. Empathy? Was that the missing piece of the puzzle? I thought back to the times when I had reached out to others, supporting them through their own trials, and I realized that empathy had indeed played a significant role in my life.
"You see," he explained, his eyes filled with a newfound intensity. "We're not just looking for someone who can excel at their job. We want someone who can understand the needs and struggles of our clients. Someone who can connect with them on a deeper level. And I believe your journey has prepared you for that."
A wave of gratitude washed over me as I absorbed his words. It was an aspect of the job that I had never considered, but now it made perfect sense. The challenges I had faced had honed my ability to see beyond the surface and truly understand others' perspectives. It had taught me the power of compassion and the importance of lending a helping hand.
"I believe you could be that person," my interviewer said softly, his gaze unwavering. "You have the unique combination of technical skills and life experience that would make you an asset to our team."
Tears welled up in my eyes, but this time they weren't born out of fear or uncertainty. They were tears of relief and gratitude for the understanding and support I had found in that room. This job interview had transformed from a mere formality to a pivotal moment in my life.
"I would be honored," I said, my voice choked with emotion. "I will give my all to this position, and I promise you won't be disappointed."
My interviewer rose from his seat, a warm smile gracing his face. "Welcome to the team," he said, extending his hand for a firm handshake. It felt like a lifeline, a bridge to an entirely new chapter in my life.
As I walked out of that room, a newfound sense of purpose surged through my veins. I had not only secured a job but also found a place where my journey would be appreciated and celebrated. The challenges I had faced had brought me here, and I was determined to make the most of this opportunity.
Little did I know, this job would not only become the turning point in my career but would also lead me to unexpected friendships, unimaginable success, and a purpose greater than anything I had ever envisioned. The interview may have been over in a jiffy, but the impact it had on my life would last a lifetime.
