Forbidden Stardust

Published 6/24/2023In a religiously diverse Martian settlement on Obenin, the ambitious and headstrong space pilot Electra embarks on a secret love affair with Angus, defying societal norms and risking everything they hold dear. Will their forbidden relationship survive the scrutiny and consequences, or will the stakes prove too high for them to bear?

The first thing I noticed about him was his eyes. They were dark, almost like the color of the night sky out in space. His hair was short and unkempt, something that can be easily fixed with some hair gel. He had a strong jawline which reminded me of my father, who was also a handsome man. He had lips that looked soft, tempting even, and a nose that looked like it could smell an entire planet's worth of perfume in one breath.
"Drink?" he asked.
He extended his arm to me and offered a glass containing an amber colored liquid. I was slightly drunk and surprised at his sudden appearance but nevertheless accepted the drink. I remember thinking how smooth my hand felt against his as I took it from him. At that moment I was glad that I had decided to wear gloves, otherwise my hands would have been cold and clammy against his warm skin.
We talked for hours, laughing and enjoying the view from the balcony overlooking the city below us. Above us, stars shone brightly in the clear night sky. The two moons were full and both hung quietly over the horizon- one on each side of us- giving their own form of light to illuminate our conversation. We talked about life on Mars, our dreams for the future, and even about our families back on Earth before we moved here to settle on Obenin. He told me about his family: his mother who died when he was just ten years old and his father who drank himself into a stupor every day after her death; about how he grew up alone until he met Victor; about how he wished he could have met my mother before she passed away- this last one made my heart melt, tears welling up in my eyes at the thought of her passing away so young. He told me about Victor- how they met while serving in a war together and became best friends- partners in crime if you will; they even got tattooed together on their left arms to symbolize their friendship (the tattoos were animals representing each other: Victor's was a wolf representing Angus whereas Angus' was a snake representing Victor)
I wanted to tell him about my parents but somehow managed to change the subject back to him once again. In between all this talk we were drinking more than we should have been but somehow neither of us cared too much about that part at least not until later on in the evening when everything turned sour...
"You know," he began slowly after an extended period of silence. "I think I love you."
The words seemed hard for him to say but by this point we had already been drinking for quite some time so I wasn't exactly thinking straight either so I just smiled at him and said "I think I love you too." And then there we were- standing face to face with each other- staring into each other's eyes like we had done many times before but suddenly this time it felt different...
He leaned forward towards me and closed the gap between us; then there it was- our lips meeting softly... we kissed passionately without realizing what we were doing until after it happened... We pulled apart abruptly; looking at each other with embarrassment written across both our faces... Both of us knew what this meant... breaking a promise... risking not only our jobs but also our lives if anyone found out! But as soon as our lips touched again it didn't matter anymore... It didn't matter anymore because all that mattered now was Angus!
Angus and I couldn't resist the pull between us any longer. We were like two stars colliding in the vast expanse of the universe, unable to deny the gravitational force that brought us together. In that stolen moment, time seemed to stand still. The weight of the world disappeared, and all I could feel was the warmth of his touch, the electricity that sparked between us.
But as quickly as it had started, reality came crashing back. The realization of what we were doing hit us hard, like a meteor striking the surface of a planet. We broke apart once more, gasping for air and trying to comprehend the consequences of our actions. For a fleeting moment, panic gripped my heart, and I saw the fear reflected in Angus's eyes.
"What have we done?" I whispered, my voice barely audible over the distant hum of the city below.
Angus ran a hand through his tousled hair, a mix of regret and longing in his gaze. "I don't know," he confessed, his voice laced with uncertainty. "But I don't think I can walk away from this."
His words sent a jolt of both excitement and dread through me. I had never imagined our connection could evolve into something more, something deeper. And yet here we were, toeing the line between passion and peril. The weight of our secret bore down on us, threatening to shatter the fragile harmony we had found.
"We have to be careful," I said, my voice trembling. "Our lives on Obenin, our families...everything could be destroyed if anyone discovered our forbidden love."
Angus nodded, a mixture of determination and raw desire evident in his eyes. "I know," he replied, his voice unwavering. "But I cannot deny what I feel. I will do whatever it takes to protect you, even if it means facing the consequences."
His words echoed in the vast silence that enveloped us. In that moment, I realized the strength of our bond. No longer just fragments of two isolated souls, we had become a constellation, intertwined and destined to navigate the stars together. I knew the road ahead would be treacherous, filled with obstacles and sacrifices, but in Angus's eyes, I saw the unwavering commitment and love that gave me hope.
As the two moons cast their gentle glow upon us, I reached out and took Angus's hand in mine. Our love would forever be a secret, a whispered tale that defied the rules of our world. But amidst the chaos and uncertainty, we vowed to protect each other, to cherish the stolen moments we had in this hidden world of ours.
Days turned into weeks, weeks into months. The facade we wore during the day masked the deep connection we shared, but the nights were ours. In the safety of darkness, we sought solace in each other's arms, finding comfort in the forbidden love that tethered us.
But the universe has a way of unraveling secrets, of revealing the truths we desperately wish to keep hidden. And so it was that on a fateful evening, our clandestine affair took a turn we had never anticipated.
It was a night of celebration, the marking of a new chapter for the people of Obenin. The air buzzed with excitement as the moonlight festival began, bathing the city in a luminescent glow. Angus and I joined the festivities, trying to blend in with the crowd, our hearts pounding with a mixture of fear and anticipation.
In the midst of the joyful chaos, I caught a glimpse of Victor, Angus's closest friend and confidant. His piercing gaze seemed to linger on us for an instant before he turned away, disappearing into the sea of revelers. Panic shot through me like a comet streaking across the night sky. Had Victor discovered our secret? Was our fragile world about to crumble?
We hurriedly made our way to a quieter part of the festival, seeking refuge in the shadows. I grasped Angus's hand, my fingers trembling with an unspoken fear. "What are we going to do?" I whispered urgently.
Angus's eyes flickered with a mix of determination and defiance. "We can't run," he said, his voice steady. "We need to face this head-on, together."
The night grew colder as the hours passed, our hearts heavy with an impending confrontation. As the moon reached its zenith, casting a silver spotlight on our anxious faces, we steeled ourselves for what was to come. The time for secrets was over; the universe demanded the truth.
Taking a deep breath, we walked back into the festival, hand in hand. The eyes of the crowd turned to us, whispers spreading like ripples in a pond. We were the stars of this cosmic drama, putting everything on the line for a love that defied the laws of our world.
And so, with our hearts pounding in unison, we faced the consequences of our forbidden love. We would carve our own destiny among the stars, even if it meant defying the very fabric of the universe itself. After all, if the cosmos could birth two souls so irrevocably intertwined, who were we to deny the gravity of our love?
