For several days now I have been staring at these words on the screen, trying to figure out how to start this log. I have been a captain of a starship for years now, and have never encountered any problem that I couldn’t solve by some combination of violence, diplomacy and technology.
But this time is different.
To my right, the door slides open and Laxmi steps in.
“Gino, you need to get some sleep or you’ll lose your edge.”
“I can’t sleep.”
Laxmi walks over and puts her slender fingers on my face. “You look like shit. Why don’t you take a shower? You smell like a horse.” She looks at me with concern.
“A horse that has had too little to drink in the middle of a desert? Or one whose legs are about to give way from exhaustion? One that needs to drink but can’t because there is no water around? A horse that is dehydrated and exhausted, but still has to pull the heavy wagon in order to survive? Are you trying to be funny? Or just stupid?”
Laxmi frowns as she tries to figure out what I am saying. Despite the lack of hair on the sides of her head, she is still quite pretty – dark skin, almond-shaped eyes, thin lips that always seem to be smiling even when she isn’t smiling. The tight uniform emphasizes her curves and makes it hard to keep my hands off her supple skin. She is struggling with an itch under her left armpit as she looks at me quizzically as if she were trying to figure out if this was one of my jokes or if I was going insane.
She doesn’t know what I mean by all of this because Laxmi hasn't been with me for years on this voyage so she cannot see what I see in my mind's eye:
