The first time I saw Dylan, I was on my way home from the market. The sun had just set in a spectacular array of pinks and purples, radiating out of a cloudless sky dotted with stars.

I was walking along the main street when I heard someone call out my name, “Sabine!”

I turned to see Dylan jogging towards me, dressed in a deep navy blue shirt and black jeans. He smiled widely as he approached me, “Seens like it’s been ages since we last met.”

“It has been a while, hasn’t it?” I returned his smile, surprised at how well he took my mind off the long slog back home.

“How have you been? You seem like you’re doing pretty well for yourself. Have you found yourself a job yet?” He asked as he caught his breath. My parents had drilled into me that our people were not supposed to consort with non-Asians and especially not with those who wore their hair long and dyed it foreign colours like Dylan did. But when he began to talk to me, I couldn’t help but swoon over his dark brown eyes that seemed to look right through me.

I blushed slightly, “No job yet but I will find one soon enough...Hopefully soon enough.” I added the last bit on hastily so he wouldn’t think that I was desperate for money.

He laughed loudly, “That is good to hear. Don’t worry, if you need any help finding a job or anything else, just let me know alright?”

A wave of excitement rushed through me as he offered to help me out but I had to pretend not to be happy about it otherwise people might get suspicious. As much as my family disapproved of Dylan and people like him, there were many others in the community who thought he was some sort of saint for offering help to those who needed it most and they respected him for it even if they didn’t agree with his choices in life. A lot of them used him as an example of what our society could be like if we allowed ourselves to be more open minded about other cultures. There were even rumours going around that some people had started to take advantage of this mindset and use Dylan as a shield so they could do whatever they wanted behind his back without anyone noticing but my parents always told me not to listen to such gossip because it wasn't true at all. They said that Dylan wasn't that kind of person and that he would never allow himself to be used for such irresponsible behaviour.

After a pause, Dylan looked down at his watch and made an apologetic face before saying goodbye abruptly and jogging off down the street in the opposite direction from where I lived so quickly that he was nothing but a blur before my eyes. My heart thumped wildly in my chest as something bubbled up inside of me making me feel all hot inside so much so that I felt myself sway slightly on the spot until I managed to regain my footing again. In that moment, I recognised something deep within myself awakening from its slumber causing the feeling inside me grow stronger until it felt like everything around me was on fire setting every nerve ending alight with electricity until suddenly something clicked inside of me and everything became calm once again leaving only one thought lingering in my head: Dylan is different from everyone else in this town and therefore doesn't care about what others think about him which meant there was no reason why *I* couldn't do what *I* wanted either because if everyone else thinks badly of *me*, then *I* don't want *them* anyway; at least not the kind of people who would judge someone unfairly based on their appearance alone...

I couldn't get Dylan out of my mind after our chance encounter on the street that evening. His carefree attitude and genuine kindness towards me had left a lasting impression. I found myself daydreaming about what it would be like to explore the world with him, free from the constraints and judgment of our small town.

But the reality of my situation quickly brought me back down to earth. My parents had raised me to be a responsible and obedient daughter, always reminding me of the importance of conforming to the expectations of our community. The mere thought of defying their wishes was enough to push my dreams aside and bring me back to the mundane reality of my everyday life.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months as I continued my monotonous routine. Every now and then, I would catch a glimpse of Dylan from afar, his vibrant hair standing out in a sea of conformity. Each sighting served as a painful reminder of the life I had always wanted but believed was out of reach.

As the days grew shorter and the air turned cooler, a restlessness began to stir within me. The approaching winter brought with it a sense of urgency, a yearning for change that I couldn't ignore any longer. I knew deep down that I had to break free from the shackles of societal expectations and chase after the life I truly desired.

One evening, as I sat by the fireplace in our modest living room, my mind wandered back to that fateful encounter with Dylan. My heart fluttered with excitement and nervous anticipation. I couldn't deny the pull I felt towards him, the magnetic force that drew me closer to the unknown.

With newfound determination, I made a plan. I would venture outside of our small town, away from the watchful eyes and judgmental whispers. I would find Dylan and seize the opportunity to explore the world beyond the boundaries I had known all my life.

Late one night, as the moon was shrouded in a blanket of clouds, I packed a small bag and quietly slipped out of my family's home. The streets were empty, and the only sound that broke the silence was the soft crunch of leaves beneath my feet. The world seemed to hold its breath as I made my way towards freedom.

With each step, the weight of expectation and conformity lifted from my shoulders. I could feel my spirit awakening, blooming like a delicate flower that had been hidden away for far too long. The night became my ally, shielding me from prying eyes and assuring me that I was on the right path.

As I walked, a sense of liberation washed over me— a liberation that came not only from leaving behind my old life but also from embracing my true self. I shed the layers of fear and doubt, leaving them behind in the darkness as I forged ahead towards the unknown.

Hours turned into days, and days turned into weeks as I journeyed across towns and cities, chasing after the flickering flame of hope that guided me. Along the way, I encountered kind strangers who offered me shelter and guidance. They showed me that the world was not as harsh and judgmental as I had been led to believe.

With gratitude in my heart, I continued my search for Dylan, following whispers and rumors that led me from place to place. Each interaction, each experience only deepened my resolve to find him and prove to myself that life could be different, that I could be different.

One day, as the sun cast its warm glow upon a bustling city, I spotted him. Dylan stood in a crowded marketplace, his colorful hair a beacon in the sea of faces. I walked towards him, my heartbeat quickening with each step. When he turned and saw me, his eyes widened in surprise and delight.

"Sabine! What are you doing here?" he exclaimed, a mixture of shock and joy in his voice.

"I couldn't stay there any longer," I replied, my voice filled with determination. "I had to find you. I had to find myself."

A smile spread across Dylan's face, and in that moment, I knew that I had made the right decision. Together, we would chart a new course, weaving a story that defied the expectations of others and embraced the beauty of our authentic selves.

Hand in hand, we disappeared into the bustling streets, ready to create our own narrative, leaving behind the shackles of a life that was never meant for us. With every step, we ventured further into the unknown, our hearts alight with the fire of defiance and the promise of a life lived true to ourselves.
