"Hey, have you seen the news?" I call out to my sister, Lily.

"No, what's going on?" she replies from her bedroom.

"It's crazy. There's a zombie apocalypse happening in the US, UK, and China."

"What? Are you serious?"

"Yeah, look." I point to the TV screen. The news anchor is reporting live from London as hordes of zombies roam the streets and chaos ensues.

"Oh my god," Lily says, joining me in front of the TV. "This is insane."

"I know. And it's not just there. It's spreading everywhere. People are panicking."

"What about here? Is it happening here too?"

I shake my head. "Not that they've said. We're pretty secluded from the rest of the world, being on this island and all."

"That's good at least."

"Yeah, but who knows how long it'll last? If it keeps spreading like this…"

"We should start preparing just in case," Lily interrupts.

I nod in agreement. "Yeah, let's go grab some supplies from the basement."

As we descend into the basement of our family home, I can't help but feel a sense of unease. The world outside may be falling apart, but at least we're safe for now.

We gather non-perishable food items and bottled water and bring them up to our kitchen pantry.

"Do you think we'll really need all this stuff?" Lily asks as she stacks cans of beans onto a shelf.

"I don't know," I reply honestly. "But it's better to be safe than sorry."

Once we've stocked up on enough supplies to last us a few weeks at least, we sit down at the kitchen table together.

"What do you think will happen next?" Lily asks me.

"I'm not sure," I admit with a sigh. "But if things keep getting worse out there, we might have to consider leaving the island."

"Where would we go?"

"I don't know. Maybe somewhere even more remote. Like that cabin in the woods that Dad used to take us to."

"Yeah, I remember that place. It was so peaceful."

"We could try to ride this thing out there, away from all the chaos and danger."

Lily nods thoughtfully. "That might be our best option. But let's hope it doesn't come to that."

I reach across the table and squeeze her hand reassuringly. "Yeah, let's hope."

The days turn into weeks, and the zombie apocalypse continues to spread across the world. The news reports get more and more grim, and it becomes clear that we can't stay on the island much longer.

Lily and I pack up our belongings and say goodbye to our childhood home. We make our way to the mainland, being careful to avoid any major cities or populated areas.

It takes us several days of driving through empty roads before we reach the cabin in the woods. It's just as peaceful and secluded as we remember it.

"This will be our safe haven," I say with a sense of relief.

"Yeah," Lily agrees with a smile.

We settle into a routine at the cabin, spending our days scavenging for supplies in nearby towns and fortifying our defenses against any potential threats.

As time goes on, we begin to hear less and less about what's happening in the rest of the world. The news reports stop coming altogether, leaving us in isolation.

"Do you think it's over?" Lily asks me one day as we sit by the fire.

"I'm not sure," I reply honestly. "But if there were still major outbreaks happening, I think we would've heard something by now."

"Yeah, you're probably right."

We fall into a comfortable silence, both lost in our own thoughts.

"Hey," Lily says suddenly, breaking the silence. "Do you ever think about what life was like before all this?"

I look at her and smile sadly. "Yeah, all the time."

"It's hard to believe that just a few months ago, everything was normal. We were worrying about school and work and all those little things that used to matter."

"I know," I say with a sigh. "But we can't dwell on the past. We have to focus on surviving and rebuilding."

Lily nods in agreement. "You're right. We have to stay strong for each other."

"We will," I promise her.

As we sit by the fire, I can't help but feel a sense of hope for the first time in a long time. The world may be in ruins, but as long as we have each other, we'll be okay.
