Forest Run
·
Published 7/7/2024James sat in the front seat of his VW, staring at the steering wheel. He ran his fingers over the grooves on the black leather, then looked out the window. A thick pine forest surrounded him on all sides.
His friends’ laughter came through the cracked-open windows in waves. It was a beautiful day outside, but James couldn’t bring himself to get out of the car.
“Hey, man,” Tom said from the backseat, “you good?”
James nodded but didn’t respond.
“It’s been a year,” Tom continued gently. “We just thought it would be good for you to get out, you know? Maybe try and have some fun.”
“I know,” James said quietly. “I want to. I just can’t seem to move.”
Tom sighed from behind him and climbed over into the passenger seat.
“What happened with her was fucked up, man,” he said softly. “But you can’t let it define your life.”
James turned to look at his friend and forced a smile. He could see genuine concern in Tom’s eyes and felt a pang of guilt for worrying him.
