Possessed by Jean Laroche
·
Published 3/18/2023An impulsive, eerily-gifted Jean Laroche mocks and manipulates his way across early-1800s France, thoughtlessly pushing his extraordinary abilities to the limit in search of power - only to find out too late that possessing others is not a game.
It was a hot summer's afternoon, and Jean-Louis Laroche had been walking for hours. He was tired, sweaty and sick of the crowds. He saw a shadow moving in the corner of his eye, and he began to turn his head. The movement stopped a few seconds later, but Jean-Louis didn't notice.
"You're... you're not from around here, are you?" he asked with a heavy accent, while pointing at a nearby building. "Me neither."
The man turned around with an uneasy smile on his face. "No... No I'm not," he said, shifting uncomfortably on his feet. "I only passed through..."
"Well then! We have that in common!" Jean-Louis exclaimed with a hearty laugh. "This city is too crowded and stuffy for my liking."
The stranger raised an eyebrow at him, clearly unsure what to make of this man. He took a couple steps back. "Yes... Well... Me neither."
"That's good!" Jean-Louis said, still laughing. "I mean, I'm from Paris myself... But this city is really just not the same." He rubbed his forehead with one hand and groaned loudly. The stranger took another step back.
"I suppose it's good that we're both feeling out of place," he said awkwardly. He started to walk away and Jean-Louis grabbed him by the arm to stop him.
"Wait! Hold on a second!" His voice sounded more panicked than he'd expected it to sound. "You don't want to.. You know.. Leave? With me?" He smirked and winked flirtatiously at the stranger, who eyed him warily before trying to pull away once again.
"Oh no! Don't go yet! We haven't even had the chance to talk!" Jean-Louis shouted as he held onto the stranger's arm tighter and pushed him up against the wall next to them while still keeping eye contact with him. The man struggled uncontrollably as his eyes widened in fear; Jean-Louis smiled weakly back at him as he licked his lips seductively, letting go of the man's arm to run his fingers across his chest instead before standing up straight once again, looking down at the struggling stranger with a mix of uncertainty and excitement in his eyes as he tried to figure out what exactly was going on inside his head, continuing to lick his lips nervously as he watched him struggle against him helplessly until finally....
*~*~*
Jean-Louis Laroche opened his eyes slowly after hearing the crowd cheer loudly behind him; he looked down in confusion when he realized that something was off about where he was standing before looking up at the sky above him in shock as he fell backwards onto the ground - knowing full well that there was nothing behind him but air - just like there wasn't anything supporting him as he landed on all fours on top of someone's shoulders; people all around him laughed heartily as they turned around to look at what sort of spectacle had been created by this strange man who was now lying face first on top of someone's shoulders without any sort of support underneath them or above them for that matter either... except for one thing:
The man who was now standing there motionless beneath Jean-Louis Laroche looked exactly like himself and everything about this scenario seemed perfectly normal for absolutely everyone who happened to be there; including but not limited to everyone who was laughing so hard that tears were streaming down their face because they had literally never seen anything so ridiculous in their entire lives before:
There was nothing supporting Jean-Louis Laroche - nothing at all - which meant that if this man decided to move at any point during this entire encounter right now then Jean-Louis would literally fall flat on his face into an embarrassing mess right here in front of God and everybody - except for one thing:
Jean-Louis could feel the laughter dying down behind him as soon as people began realizing that this wasn't just some ordinary joke or prank; no one had ever seen anything quite like this before either - not even in their wildest dreams could they imagine seeing something like this ever happen... especially not today! And especially certainly not like this! Because no one could possibly think that something like this would ever happen here...
Except for one person:
Jean-Louis couldn't stop staring at himself incredulously; he looked just like himself alright but there were some minor differences too: His hair wasn't gelled so stiffly - it actually looked kind of natural for once - and there was also something else different about himself that made this experience even more surreal than it already felt: He hadn't even felt himself climbing onto someone's shoulder yet here he was doing it anyway... But how? How did he do it? And why? Wasn't anyone else shocked by what they were seeing? Did they even realize what they were witnessing? Jean-Louis darted his eyes over towards everyone else around them; some people looked shocked but most people just stood around looking indifferent... Just like always! It didn't matter if you were living your life normally or if you were acting like a complete fool in public either way people just went on minding their own business while watching you do whatever you wanted without ever being able to understand what exactly goes through your mind when you start acting like some sort of psychopath... because these people didn't know how satisfying it can be acting like an idiot when no one expects anything from you anymore! They didn't know how nice it feels when nobody is watching or judging you anymore! All these thoughts flooded through Jean-Louis' mind as he continued staring down at himself unable to believe what was happening right now but after thinking about everything for several moments longer without getting any closer to figuring out what exactly was going on here suddenly....
