Lyodicus: Challenges Unending
·
Published 4/21/2023Determined and feisty, Lyodicus, a 1st century BCE North Atlantic spy, uses his cleverness and spunk to overcome intense conflicts as he challenges all odds to complete a secret mission for his king, which requires obtaining a mysterious weapon in an uncharted region.

"The stars have aligned," thought Lyodicus, as he surveyed the vast ocean before him. There was nothing but water in all directions on his voyage to the unknown land of the far North. As a spy for King Cormacus, the mission he had been given was important, but also dangerous. The king had employed his best men and women to complete this mission, but none had returned except for an old sea captain. This captain told tales of an unknown mountainous land full of strange creatures and magic.
Despite the risk, Lyodicus continued his journey with determination. The only tools that they had to aid in their travels were several maps and compasses which they acquired from allied kingdoms. These odd devices would tell you where you are and where you are going. It took Lyodicus weeks to learn how to use them correctly. The compass needle always pointed north towards the unknown land, so he knew he was heading in the correct direction. He had no idea how long it would take him to reach his destination, but Lyodicus knew he was at least getting close when he spotted a floating island in the distance.
The island itself was unimpressive. It floated lazily above the water without any visible means of propulsion. Its shape was round and covered with grass that waved slowly back and forth as if being blown by a gentle wind. It appeared to be uninhabited other than some strange white birds circling around its perimeter. When Lyodicus approached closer, one of these birds suddenly swooped down towards him with its beak open wide like it was going to peck him right on top of his head!
Lyodicus quickly ducked just in time and felt a gust of wind pass over him as the bird flew off into the sky again laughing hysterically at his near miss. Another bird flew up toward him and said "Are you daft? That bird is an arsehole!". Lyodicus responded "I've never heard of a talking bird before." "Where do you come from?" asked the bird expectantly while flying beside Lyodicus' head as they made their way toward the island together toward its center where there were two large rocks sitting next to each other on opposite sides of what looked like a gateway.
"I'm from Cormacus' kingdom," replied Lyodicus proudly, "and I am here on official business."
"What kind of business?" inquired the bird curiously.
"Official business," said Lyodicus flatly as he strode past the little feathered creature who seemed disappointed not to learn anything more about his voyage.
When Lyodicus reached the two rocks standing next to each other, something strange happened! One rock moved out of his way revealing a tunnel behind it leading into darkness below while the other rock moved back into place now blocking this new tunnel! Could these rocks be sentient? Lyodicus looked at both rocks but neither moved or even gave any indication that they were aware that their positions had changed!
"What is happening?" thought Lyodicus as he reached out to touch one of them only to find that it was solid concrete! This was very odd indeed! How could one rock move out of place while another moved back into place? If they weren't sentient then what caused them to move independently like this?
Suddenly, there was a loud screech followed by laughter coming from somewhere nearby! As Lyodicus turned around looking for its source, he saw three figures approaching him from out of nowhere! One of them resembled an otter with bright yellow whiskers and big brown eyes, another one looked like a weasel wearing an eye patch over its left eye, and lastly, there was an enormous bear-like creature with big sharp teeth wearing what appeared to be a tall red hat with black markings upon it! They all stood next to each other watching and laughing at Lyodicus' surprise as they noticed him staring at them in disbelief!
"Who are you?!" shouted Lyodicus indignantly after regaining his composure which startled all three creatures causing them again burst into laughter. "We're adventurers, exploring this floating island," replied Bear-hat with excitement in its voice. They introduced themselves as Otter-whiskers, Weasel-patch, and Bear-hat, admitting that even they found their names peculiar, given by their parents or mothers whose memories were not always reliable.
Listening intently to the comical trio's banter and laughter, Lyodicus calmly asked for their assistance in navigating the mysterious island. The group ventured together toward the center, still baffled by the moving rocks, hoping to uncover secrets buried deep within the floating landscape. Their laughter and joviality echoed throughout the island, making Lyodicus feel a sense of camaraderie with these unexpected companions, united by their shared curiosity and determination.
