Shattered Dreams of Creation
·
Published 6/7/2023With his family's future on the line, a desperate computer hacker frantically attempts to uncover and repair a fatal programming error, risking his freedom and life in the process.

“Cheers to the end of the world!” Chuck lifted his glass and downed the shot. He slammed it down on the table and leaned back in his chair, a bit tipsy already.
“I don’t want to drink to that, man,” said Aaron as he pushed his glass away from him reluctantly. “This is supposed to be a happy occasion. Maybe I can get drunk later.”
Chuck reached out for the bottle and refilled his glass, spilling more than he wanted. “Don't be like that, man. We have a few months left on this rock and then we will be throwing ourselves at whatever god or alien race that created us into the nearest black hole. What does it matter if we start early? Besides, I just heard from my cousin who works in the government that they are expecting some kind of extinction level event in a year or so.”
Aaron looked around nervously at the other people in their private booth. “That is a stupid thing to say, Chuck! People are always saying things like that but nothing ever happens! It was only earlier today when I saw one of the guys in my department talking about how there was going to be an alien invasion soon and that they were already here among us! That guy is such a moron. Just look around you—we are at a restaurant, not an alien abduction site.”
Chuck took another sip of his scotch and let out a loud belch. “Well, it doesn't really matter what you believe because we will all be dead soon anyway—the point is, why not enjoy yourself while we still have time? Hey! Give me your phone for a second? I want to show you something funny!”
Aaron put his phone on the table and turned around to pull out his wallet from his pocket. He took out some money and left it at the table before leaving with Chuck towards the washroom. Once outside, Chuck pulled out a small device from his pocket and pointed it at Aaron's phone for a few seconds until he heard a beep letting him know that he had successfully hacked into the phone's system. He slid the screen to unlock it and started looking through the phone's files until he found what he was looking for: E-mails between Aaron's girlfriend and incognito lover.
Aaron stormed up to Chuck with fire in his eyes as he snatched his phone from him. “What did you do? Did you read my e-mails? Give me my phone now!”
Chuck shook his head while laughing loudly as he watched Aaron scroll through each of the e-mails repeatedly trying to figure out who sent them before finally snapping it shut angrily and shoving it back into his pocket with anger written all over his face.
“Well, well, well…looks like someone has been having fun behind your back! I guess you should have kept better tabs on her huh? You trust her too much…well she doesn't deserve your trust—look at her writing sonny Jim! She talks about fucking this other guy! This is what happens when you let women roam freely without any supervision—they cheat on you with anything that moves!”
