"Get out!" he said, his voice low and dangerous. "I don't want to see your face in this house again."
She stood there, stunned into silence. Her husband's words hung in the air like a death sentence. How had it come to this? She had known that her affair would have consequences, but she hadn't expected this. She thought he loved her too much to throw her out like a common whore.
"Did you hear me?" he growled. "I said get out!"
Tears welled up in her eyes as she turned and fled from the room. She hurriedly gathered some clothes and personal items, shoving them into a bag with trembling hands. She could hear him downstairs, banging around in the kitchen as she made her way to their bedroom.
As she descended the stairs, he appeared at the bottom, blocking her path.
"Don't even think about taking anything that belongs to me," he warned.
"I just need some clothes," she pleaded. "Please, let me take some clothes."
He shook his head, his expression cold and unyielding.
"You can buy new clothes with all the money you're getting from him," he sneered.
She winced at his cruel words but knew better than to argue with him. She quickly made her way past him and grabbed a coat from the rack by the front door before stepping outside into the frigid winter night.
She stood on the doorstep for a moment, unsure of where to go or what to do next. The bitter wind cut through her thin coat like a knife as she huddled on the porch, contemplating her next move.
Suddenly, a car pulled up in front of the house and the passenger-side window rolled down. Her lover's face appeared in the window, concern etched across his features.
"Are you okay?" he asked softly.
She nodded numbly as she made her way over to the car. He got out and opened the door for her, helping her inside before returning to the driver's seat.
As they drove away from the house, she couldn't help but feel a sense of relief. She was free from her loveless marriage at last. But as that thought sank in, so did another.
What had she done?
She had thrown away everything for this man. Her home, her husband, her life. And now she was completely dependent on him. What if he got tired of her? What if he decided he didn't want her anymore? What would become of her then?
Her thoughts were interrupted by his voice.
"Are you okay?" he asked again.
She nodded, not trusting herself to speak.
"Don't worry," he said reassuringly. "I'll take care of you."
His words filled her with a sense of hope as they drove off into the night, leaving her past behind and venturing into an uncertain future together.
