Tangled Silver Trance

The first time Sae leaned over my shoulder to look at my phone, I knew I was in trouble. Her hair brushed my forearm and I forgot what I was reading. It was that soft. Like rabbit fur and silk had a baby and that baby was a waterfall of red.

She knows it too. That's the worst part.

She's been doing it all afternoon. Leaning close. Tossing her head back when she laughs. Letting those strands catch the light from the window so they glow like embers. Every time I look up, she's looking at me with those green eyes, a little smile playing at the corner of her mouth. She knows what she's doing.

"You look tense," she says. We're on her couch, some movie playing on the TV that neither of us is watching. She's curled up on the other end, bare feet tucked under her thigh. "Long day?"

I shrug. "Same as always."

She stretches, slow and deliberate, arms going up over her head. Her shirt rides up just a fraction of an inch. The movement sends that red hair spilling down her back and over the arm of the couch. She lets her hands drop and shakes her head, just a little, so the hair settles around her shoulders like a living thing.

"I don't know how you do it," she says. "All that work. I'd go crazy."

I can't stop looking at her hair. She catches me. Her smile widens.

"You know," she says, and her voice drops just slightly, "if you wanted to touch it, you could just ask."

Bold move. Calling me out like that.

I lean forward, elbows on my knees. "I don't need to ask."

Her eyebrows go up. "Oh really?"

"Really."

She laughs, but there's something curious in it now. A tilt to her head. I've got her attention.

I pull the watch from my pocket. It's an old thing. Silver case, worn smooth from years of handling. My grandfather's. He used it for parlor tricks at family gatherings. Made the cousins laugh. Made the aunts uncomfortable. He taught me how to use it when I was twelve, swore me to secrecy, told me it was a gift that came with responsibility.

I never told him what I'd use it for.

"What's that?" Sae asks. She's sitting up straighter now. Interested.

"Just an old watch." I let it dangle from the chain. It catches the light, spins slowly. "My grandfather gave it to me."

"It's pretty."

"It works, too." I click the button on top. The lid pops open. Inside, the face is yellowed ivory, the numbers painted in black that's faded to brown. The second hand ticks in its slow, steady circle.

Sae leans forward. Her hair falls across her cheek. She doesn't push it away.

"Can I see it?"

"Sure." I hold it out to her.

She takes it carefully, fingers brushing mine. The touch is warm. Brief. She turns the watch over in her palm, runs her thumb across the engravings on the back. A compass rose. My grandfather's initials. The year he got it, 1947.

"It's heavy," she says. "Real silver?"

"Solid sterling."

She holds it up to her ear. "It's so quiet. I thought watches ticked loud."

"This one's different." I reach out. "Here. Let me show you."

She hands it back. I take the chain between my fingers and let the watch drop. It swings. A slow pendulum. Tick. Tick. Tick.

"See how smooth it moves?" I say. "It's not a quartz movement. It's mechanical. All those tiny gears and springs working together."

Sae watches it swing. Her eyes track it left to right, left to right.

"That's kind of hypnotic," she says, and laughs.

I laugh too. "You think?"

"Yeah. Like a metronome or something."

I let it swing a few more beats. Then I reach out and touch her hair.

She doesn't pull away. Her eyes stay on the watch, but I feel her relax. Just a little. Just enough.

"It's so soft," I say. "I don't think I've ever touched hair this soft."

"Told you." Her voice is quieter now.

I run my fingers through it. Down from the crown of her head, past her shoulder, to where it pools on the couch cushion. It's like threading water. There's no resistance. No tangles. Just silk sliding through my fingers.

"Your hair is amazing," I say.

She doesn't answer. Her eyes are still on the watch.

I let the chain slip through my fingers so the watch swings wider. Slower. The arc lengthens. The seconds stretch.

"You know what I love about this watch?" I say.

"What?" Her voice is distant now. Dreamy.

"The way it moves. Back and forth. Back and forth. So steady. So predictable."

She nods. A small nod. Her eyes haven't left the silver circle.

"You can feel it, can't you?" I say. "That rhythm. It's like a heartbeat. Slow and deep. Each swing pulling you in a little more."

Her breathing changes. Deepens. Her shoulders drop.

"I can feel it," she whispers.

"Good." I keep my voice low. Even. "That's good. Just let it happen. Let the motion carry you. Each time it swings left, you sink a little deeper. Each time it swings right, you feel a little heavier."

Her eyelids flutter. She blinks slow, like she's fighting to keep her eyes open.

"No need to fight it," I say. "You're safe here. You're comfortable. The couch is soft beneath you. The room is warm. The only thing that matters is the watch. Back and forth. Back and forth. Each swing pulling you deeper into that warm, heavy feeling."

She swallows. Her lips part slightly.

"You can hear it too," I say. "That tiny tick. So soft you almost can't hear it. But you can. It's there. Tick. Tick. Tick. Each tick pulling you down. Each tock letting you go deeper."

Her eyes are half closed now. Her head has tilted back against the couch cushion. Her hair spills everywhere.

"Sae," I say.

"Mmm?"

"Can you hear me?"

"Yes." The word comes out slow. Drawn out.

"Good. I want you to keep listening to my voice. But I also want you to keep watching the watch. Can you do that?"

"Yes."

"Even as your eyes get heavy. Even as your body gets so relaxed you can barely move. Keep watching. Let the watch be the only thing in the world."

She doesn't respond. But her eyes stay fixed on the silver circle swinging back and forth.

I move closer. Sit on the edge of the coffee table in front of her. The watch swings between us.

"I'm going to count down from ten," I say. "With each number, you'll go deeper. By the time I reach one, you'll be completely relaxed. Completely at peace. Nothing else will matter. Just my voice. Just the watch. Just this moment."

She blinks. Slow.

"Ten." I let the word hang. "Feeling your body settle into the couch. The cushions holding you. Supporting you. Letting go of all the tension in your shoulders."

Her shoulders drop another inch.

"Nine. Letting go of your jaw. Your tongue resting at the bottom of your mouth. Your lips slightly parted. All that tension draining away."

Her lips part further. Her breathing is deep and even now.

"Eight. Feeling that warmth spread through your chest. Down your arms. Into your fingers. Your hands are so heavy now. Too heavy to lift."

Her hands rest palms up on her thighs. Motionless.

"Seven. Letting that warmth flow down into your stomach. Your hips. Your legs. Each muscle releasing. Each fiber softening. You're sinking into the couch like it's pulling you down."

Her head lolls slightly to the side.

"Six. The watch keeps swinging. Back and forth. Back and forth. You can't look away from it. You don't want to look away from it. It's the most beautiful thing you've ever seen."

"Beautiful," she echoes. Her voice is barely a whisper.

"Five. So deep now. So relaxed. Every breath you take pulls you deeper. Every exhale lets you sink further. You're floating in a warm, dark ocean. No waves. No current. Just stillness."

Her eyes are almost completely closed now. Just slits. Just enough to see the watch.

"Four. You can still hear my voice. My voice is your anchor. My voice keeps you safe. You don't need to think. You don't need to move. You just need to listen."

"Listen," she breathes.

"Three. So close now. So deep. The world outside this room doesn't exist. There's no past. No future. Just this moment. Just my voice. Just the watch."

Her face is slack. Beautiful. Completely open.

"Two. One more number. One more step down. When I say one, you'll be all the way under. Completely relaxed. Completely at peace. You'll hear my voice and respond, but nothing else will reach you."

She doesn't move. Doesn't speak. Just waits.

"One."

Her eyes close. Her body goes completely still.

I stop the watch. Close the lid. Slip it back into my pocket.

For a long moment, I just look at her. She looks asleep. Peaceful. Her red hair fans out across the cushion like a halo.

I reach out and touch it again. Run my fingers through it from root to tip. She doesn't react. Doesn't stir.

"Can you hear me?" I ask.

"Yes." The word is soft. Distant.

"You're going to stay right here. Relaxed and comfortable. You're going to enjoy this. Every touch. Every stroke. And when I'm done, you're going to wake up feeling refreshed. You won't remember anything that happened while you were under. You'll just feel good. Rested. Content."

"Okay."

I gather her hair in my hands. Lift it. Let it fall through my fingers like water.

I've wanted this for weeks. Months. Every time she tossed her head back in class. Every time she leaned close to show me something on her phone. Every time she caught me staring and smiled that knowing smile.

Now I have it.

Now I have all of it.

I start at the crown of her head, working my fingers through the strands in slow, gentle strokes. Her hair is even softer than I imagined. Thicker. Heavier. It spills over my hands and cascades down her back, a river of copper and fire.

I separate it into sections. Braid it. Unbraid it. Twist it into a loose bun and let it fall again. I run my nails lightly across her scalp and she sighs, a sound so soft and satisfied it makes my chest ache.

This is what I wanted. This is what I needed.

Her hair is a universe and I'm exploring every inch of it.
