Uma Maga's Endurance Odyssey
·
Published 3/17/2023Uma Maga and her intrepid group of young boys face a treacherous ten-day journey against corrupt law enforcement, gangsters and snipers, forcing them to confront questions of morality and courage in order to survive the harrowing crucible awaiting them.
It was the day of the big race. I was nervous, but it wasn’t like I had anything to lose. The race was all I had left; it meant everything to me.
As if on cue, the guards came to get me. “Time for you to go, Uma Maga.” The guard said to me as he dragged me out of my cell and into a dark hallway. “You have one more chance to defy the odds, kid. Good luck!” The guard said as he let go of my arms and shoved me into a small room with a man sitting next to a table. On that table was a book, some papers, and an inkpot and quill. The man looked up at me; his face was half covered by a hood and he wore a large hat that shadowed his eyes.
“Uma Maga! It is time for you to sign the contract for your final race!” He said in an authoritarian manner as he pushed the book towards me on the table. I looked at him, then back down at the book. I took a deep breath and sat myself across from him at the table and picked up the quill in my left hand while I unsheathed a knife in my right hand and stabbed it down into my forearm, drawing blood until a drop fell onto the paper with my signature written on it in neat handwriting. A bright flash of light shot out of nowhere, blinding me momentarily before I regained vision again. As I looked around, there was nobody but me in this room anymore; even the contract had disappeared into thin air.
Suddenly, two guards burst through the door and grabbed onto both of my arms tightly as they dragged me out of the room and down a long hallway that led to an arena full of people cheering loudly at something going on in front of them. “Oh jeez…What did I get myself into now?” A few minutes later after being dragged through the crowd and up onto an elevated platform on the stage where everyone could see me clearly, two guards ripped off all of my clothing except for my underwear and then placed shackles around both of my ankles and wrists before pushing me off of the platform towards what looked like an enormous dragon made entirely out of metal with flames emanating from its mouth towards some kind of target ahead of it that was moving ever closer towards it every moment as if drawn by magic. That’s when it hit me: this wasn’t just any dragon; this was one of those fire-breathing mechanical dragons that kids used to play with back home before they were banned because they were deemed too dangerous! Before I could think about this revelation any longer however, something nearly slammed into my face which caused me to fall over backwards onto my side while emitting a shriek that would have put any banshee to shame! My eyes widened in fear as I saw four little boys not much older than myself jump off from their saddle on top of their own mechanical dragons towards their own targets ahead of them as well! As soon as they hit their targets however, all four robots exploded violently in midair before turning into rubble and dust upon hitting the ground below them! The audience went wild with applause as somebody walked onto stage dressed like some kind of magician who seemingly used magic to make all four pieces reassemble themselves back into working robots again before hopping back onto their saddles and jumping off again! This cycle continued until only three boys remained still standing; one boy from each continent: Africa, Europe, and North America while another boy jumped off from his robot towards mine instead! After putting his robot back together again once more, he hopped down from his saddle onto mine before jumping over me so he could hop aboard mine instead! He got lucky this time because he managed to climb up onto mine right before it exploded underneath him; unfortunately for him though, he didn’t get lucky enough because he ended up falling flat on his face when mine turned into dust underneath him anyway!
I didn’t know why but somehow watching this young boy fail gave me renewed confidence in myself along with motivation to win this race no matter what happened so that maybe I would be able to help him too someday somehow someway if we ever met again… Even though it would probably be impossible outside of here…
