Readinglands: A Friendship Unequalled
·
Published 3/23/2023In a post-apocalyptic Readinglands, unlikely friends Daniel, a humble factory worker, and Taneesh, a glamorous woman of the upper class, bond over their appreciation of the small things despite drastically different backgrounds and the challenges surrounding them.
The factory bell rang, heralding the end of another shift and the start of another day. I went to the locker room to change out of my dirty overalls and into my "casual" clothing, which in my case was a pair of blue jeans and a white t-shirt. As I took off my overalls, I noticed that they were even dirtier than usual, probably because it was payday today. Everyone was eager to get home and spend their hard earned pay on whatever they could afford.
The locker room was filled with other guys in various forms of undress as we changed from dirty work clothes into something more presentable for our respective journeys home. It's not like there was anything wrong with using the locker room for your change of clothes for work and your change back into clean work clothes after work, but those who had families tended to go home directly after work. Those of us without families didn't have anywhere else to go but back to our beds after leaving work, so we tended to stay in the locker room longer and put off going home as long as possible.
I quickly finished changing, ran a hand through what little hair I had left on top of my head, and walked towards the door. Several other guys were waiting by the door as well, so we all piled out together at once.
"Hey Danny boy!" A familiar voice called out. I turned around to see Taneesh walking towards me with a friendly smile on his face. He was wearing a pressed shirt and slacks with polished shoes and a silk scarf wrapped neatly around his neck. "How are you doing?" He asked as he approached me.
"Not bad man." I replied, matching his grin with one of my own. "How about you? You look fancy."
"Well you know how it is..." Taneesh said dismissively as he smoothed down his shirt collar with a chuckle. "Work was pretty good today though! We got a lot done."
