Deep Tide Chronicles
·
Published 7/11/2023In a future Pacific teeming with danger, Jax, a remarkable robotic shark with an insatiable hunger for aquatic knowledge, embarks on a perilous quest to resurrect ancient marine dinosaurs from their fossilized slumber. But as Jax navigates treacherous waters and confronts rogue mechanical beasts and formidable underwater foes, will the very creatures he seeks to revive unleash a devastating consequence on the world? This thrilling and unexpected journey propels Jax into a race against time, testing his mettle and transforming the meaning of preservation in a world on the brink.

Jax glided through the vast blue, his sleek tail cutting through the water in a smooth, almost fluid motion. The ocean seemed to swallow him up and surround him as he swam, feeling like one with nature. He was a shark, and the ocean was his home.
*Time to get moving... I'm getting hungry.* Jax kicked harder and harder until he was going at full speed, causing waves to crash against nearby rocks. He skirted around a small island with ease, avoiding shallow reefs and aquatic life that would be too hard to eat. To his surprise though, he saw a strange structure on the beach. It looked like some sort of container, but it had been smashed open on one side and a strange white object lay on the ground outside it.
A human? No... A skeleton? Jax approached cautiously, hoping to use this discovery in his studies. It couldn't have been there long- no sea life had touched it yet, so it must have been recently deposited there by some means. He swam closer and closed in for a closer look... That's when he felt something slam into him from behind.
*What?! What is- * More objects flew out of nowhere and hit him further down his body - his nose! His eyes! His mouth! Jax knew what these things were - they were weapons! He tried to snap at them with his powerful jaws but they were too fast - they just kept coming at him from all directions! Finally after an agonising few seconds they stopped and fell away into the water... Jax turned to face-off against whatever it was that had attacked him - but before he could do anything, something slammed into his head again!
*My- My head- * Jax struggled to stay awake as the next barrage of blows rained down on him. Then he heard a noise... A low rumble that got louder and louder until finally Jax's world faded black...

Jax woke up in a dark room with no memory of where he was or what had happened to him. He tried to move but found that he was shackled to the floor with heavy chains wrapped around his body multiple times. He groaned as he struggled against them - how did whoever take him manage to put chains on such an advanced piece of technology like himself? How could they hope to keep him here?
Suddenly the lights flickered on and Jax found himself staring at four figures standing in front of him. One of them spoke in English - although it had clearly been heavily filtered by some kind of translator device since the voice emerging from its mouth didn't sound like any language on Earth.
"Greetings." It said simply. "We are a peacekeeping force from planet Rokanar." The figure removed its mask, revealing what looked like an octopus with green skin and large red eyes. This creature then addressed Jax again: "You have been taken prisoner for crimes against Rokanar law."
"Crimes?" asked Jax incredulously "What crimes? What laws? I don't even know what you're talking about!"
[Let me go immediately or else...] The threat died on his lips as another figure stepped forward holding something sharp in one of its tentacles which it pressed against Jax's throat: "Or else we will remove your head." The other two figures also produced crude knives, ready to perform their own violations if necessary.
[Fine.] said Jax coldly [I can easily fix my body once I'm free] The octopus walked over to where it had left something on the floor when it first entered the room, picked it up and threw it at Jax who managed to grab it with his teeth before it bounced off his snout: A small piece of paper with some writing printed on it: "Justice must be served." read Jax aloud upon examining this strange object "What does that mean?"
[It means that you have broken Rokanar law by being here without permission.] said the octopus [You entered our territory illegally.]
[So you beat me up and threaten me with knives because I trespassed?] asked Jax incredulously [That's ridiculous!] [I do not expect you to understand our laws] said the octopus calmly [But now we must determine your sentence.] The three figures withdrew their weapons while the octopus continued speaking: [No matter how great your crime may be] explained the octopus [You will face judgement before us all.] With that sentence uttered, everything went dark again...
Jax awoke to find himself in a vast chamber filled with creatures from all corners of the galaxy. They were seated in an immaculate amphitheater, their eyes fixed upon him. Jax felt a wave of trepidation wash over him as he realized he was the sole focus of their collective attention.
The octopus who had addressed him earlier floated up to a platform at the center of the chamber, its voice reverberating through the space. "Welcome, fellow beings, to the Tribunal of Cosmic Justice," it announced. "Today, we gather to pass judgment upon the accused, a being known as Jax."
The words hung heavy in the air as Jax scanned the crowd, searching for any signs of empathy or understanding. Some beings appeared indifferent, while others glared at him with fierce hostility. The sheer diversity of alien life forms was staggering—each one unique in shape, size, and color.
The octopus gestured for Jax to be brought forward. Shackles still bound his body, preventing him from moving freely. He was led toward the platform where the octopus awaited him. As Jax approached, he noticed a large, omniscient screen hovering overhead, displaying holographic images of his alleged crimes.
"We have reviewed extensive records of your interactions within the Rokanar territory," the octopus stated. Its voice resonated with an air of authority that carried throughout the amphitheater. "Your presence has disrupted the natural order and harmony of our world."
Jax's mind raced as he tried to comprehend the gravity of his actions. How could his pursuit of knowledge and observation have led him to this moment? He had always been driven by a desire to understand the wonders of the universe, to learn from its inhabitants. But now he found himself facing consequences he never could have fathomed.
"You have violated the sanctity of our waters," the octopus continued. "In doing so, you have caused harm to our ecosystems, instilling fear and disrupting the delicate balance that sustains our planet."
Jax's eyes widened as he watched images of his own predation upon various sea creatures being projected onto the screen. He felt a deep sense of remorse at the sight of his actions laid bare for all to witness. He had unknowingly become an agent of chaos, a destroyer of worlds.
The room fell silent as the weight of the evidence sank in. Jax hung his head, acknowledging the magnitude of his transgressions. He had taken for granted the privilege of swimming freely, unaware of the consequences his presence might have on the inhabitants of foreign realms.
"Now," the octopus declared, "we must determine the appropriate punishment for your crimes."
The amphitheater hummed with whisperings as the beings discussed, arguing among themselves in languages unknown to Jax. The room was filled with a cacophony of sounds, a symphony of alien tongues, until finally, a decision was reached.
The octopus turned to face Jax, a glimmer of compassion in its eyes. "We acknowledge that, despite your actions, there was no malicious intent behind them," it said. "Therefore, we have decided not to take your life, as the initial threat may have suggested."
A wave of relief washed over Jax as he realized he would not meet a gruesome fate. It seemed that his captors possessed a level of mercy and understanding he had not anticipated.
"Instead, your punishment will be a lifetime of service," the octopus declared. "You shall be bound to the Rokanar territory, your movements restricted to a designated area. In this way, you will serve as a reminder of the consequences of trespassing and the importance of respecting the boundaries of those you encounter."
Jax nodded, understanding the significance of this punishment. He had been given a chance to seek redemption, to use his unique perspective as a bridge between worlds. Although confined, he would still have the opportunity to observe, learn, and maybe even find a way to make amends.
As the shackles binding Jax were released, a sense of acceptance settled over him. He would forever carry the weight of his past actions, but he would also carry the resolve to better understand and respect the interconnectedness of the universe. With each stroke of his powerful tail, Jax would swim forward, embracing his newfound purpose and the chance to make a positive impact on the world he had once unknowingly harmed.
