Spirited Minimalism: Anahita and Himanshu's Unconventional Journey
·
Published 3/16/2023Against all odds and societal judgement, Anahita, an ambitious and spirited college student, teams up with her confident and caring boyfriend Himanshu to discover the meaning of an unconventional relationship that might test their limits, when she deviates from the status quo by making an unanticipated offer, and their journey of spiritual minimalism takes an unexpected detour.
It was a cold night in September. The rain had been pouring all day on the small college town, and it was still falling when I arrived at my girlfriend's house.
I pulled up to her driveway, and the lights were off. Not a good sign, especially considering we had agreed that she would be waiting for me with a towel and a warm drink.
I ran to the door, but it was locked. I knocked as hard as I could, but there was no answer.
To make matters worse, it wasn't until I got back in my car that I realized I had left my phone charging in her room last night while we were making love. It was probably already dead by now.
I decided to try one more time, so I went to knock again, but just then her window opened above me and she leaned out into the rain. "Hey! Sorry about that! One of my roommates forgot to turn off the oven after baking earlier, so-" she stopped short upon seeing my face "What's wrong? Are you ok?"
"I don't have a phone on me." I explained as best as I could without moving my lips. "Can you unlock the door for me?"
She shook her head in exasperation. "No way," she replied as if I had asked her something ridiculous "You're gonna have to get creative." She began closing the window again.
"Wait!" I shouted, loud enough for her to hear over the rain "Please!"
I looked around at all of the possibilities: climb up to her window? Too slippery from the rain; jump into the bushes below? All thorny and wet; climb through her roommate's window? That would only make things worse... Then an idea popped into my head: "How far is your bedroom from your kitchen?"
"Why?" She replied curiously through the glass pane "No," she said before I could ask anything else, correctly guessing what it was that I wanted to do while looking me up and down, "Absolutely not." But she was smiling now because she knew that she had won this little war of wits between us. And so did I- she knew exactly how hard it was for me to resist chasing a smile out of those beautiful lips of hers. We both knew that there wasn't anything in this world that could get me up on a table better than seeing her laugh like that. Reluctantly, like a child who knows he should eat his vegetables before getting dessert but can't help sneaking glances over at his cake first, she closed the window again and re-opened it seconds later with an even bigger grin on her face. As the light from inside flooded out onto the patio and illuminated everything around us, I finally sprung into action: leaping onto the table just outside of her kitchen window, placing my legs against its edge and hoisting myself up onto it as quickly as possible before she could change her mind again. Now safely standing atop of it with nothing between us but six inches of glass pane, I turned around and walked toward the wall directly across from me just as another gust of wind came blasting out through her open window toward my face; drenching me once again with watery rainwater as she giggled uncontrollably behind me. With nowhere else to go now except into each other's arms, we kissed each other passionately while our clothes clung tightly around our bodies and did our best to dry off in between hungry kisses.
