"No more, I can't do this anymore." I said.
"We are almost there, Demeter!" Salmander replied excitedly. His voice echoed down the long corridor as if he was right next to me.
"I know, I know," a small whimper escaped my lips, "it's just...if we get caught...we are both dead."
Salmander laughed, "But we are not going to get caught."
It has been three weeks since I met Salmander. He was the first person to show me any kindness in my life. He showed me how to speak, how to eat and how to defend myself from others who were just as cruel and violent as my father.
"Oh no! Not again!" Salmander exclaimed.
I looked up and saw a figure at the end of the hallway. The hallway was circular and led back out into the main hall way where my father resided. I hurried quickly towards Salmander and pressed my back against his tail hoping that the figure would not notice us. A small light flickered off of his scales and illuminated the hallway enough so that we could see who it was.
My heart sank to my stomach when I realized it was one of my father's guards. He walked down the hallway slowly with his head bent low as if looking for something on the ground. It took him forever it seemed until he finally passed by us and out of our sight line.
"Phew!" Salmander sighed as he let out a small laugh, "That was close."
He reached behind me with his fin and tapped on my side lightly to get my attention, "We should keep moving before someone else sees us." He said kindly. Then without waiting for me to reply or follow him he turned around and headed further down the hallway towards our destination.
