“You got it?” he asked.

“Yeah, one sec.” I fumbled with my phone and dialed the number. “Okay, go for it.”

He grabbed me and pulled me close, wrapping his arms around me. I had felt this before, but it was different now—I was looking at him with desire in my eyes, not just friendship. He leaned down and kissed me gently on the lips. It felt nice, but nothing like I had imagined. Maybe we were both so inexperienced that we didn’t know what to do. But then again, maybe it was because of our inexperience that we liked each other so much. We were too scared to screw things up by going for more than a kiss on the lips, even though we wanted more. My heart pounded and my body trembled as I pushed back from him, breaking the embrace.

“What are you doing?” he whispered as he reached out to hold me again. There was something in his voice that made me want to just give in and let him pull me back into his arms. But we had gone too far already; if I was going to stop him now, I didn’t know how I could face him again without making it awkward between us forever more.

“We can’t do this! We have to end this relationship between our characters! Don’t you remember? That kiss today is supposed to be their last kiss!” Even saying those words caused my heart to ache and my whole body felt cold inside—as if someone had walked over my grave or something like that. At least I didn’t sound as desperate as I felt inside—my voice sounded strong and confident. I took a deep breath and continued talking, trying to keep the tears from welling up in my eyes, “We need to play it like they hate each other now! You know what would be better? If you shoved me away from you when we leave here tonight! You don’t want anything to do with me anymore! Today…today was the last time you ever kissed me! Do you get it?! Do you get what we have to do?!” I ran out of the makeup room before he could say anything else.

I put on a brave face while walking down the hallway back towards the set, but when I turned the corner and saw Fourth waiting for me near where they were going to film his reaction shot, my heart sank in my chest and all hope left my mind. He looked at me with sad eyes as he approached me slowly; I knew he would try again and try harder this time because he couldn’t stand seeing me upset like this either (I think). But there was no way around this…we had to end our relationship between our characters on screen or else people would start asking questions about why we were acting so distant toward each other off screen and everyone would wonder what happened between us two behind closed doors—and we weren’t ready for that kind of publicity yet…if ever at all….it might ruin our careers before they even started….we had dreamed of being big stars together since we were kids….but now…how could we look each other in the eye after this….

But then as he stepped forward and reached out for me, I thought about how close we had become over these last few years together; how much fun we always seemed to have together on set; how many times he had been there for me when one of my family members was sick or about to lose their job; how happy he always made me feel even when things weren’t going so great for either one of us; how much I trusted him with all of my secrets; how much better everything seemed to seem when I was near him….

And then suddenly instead of pulling away from him like usual, I stood still in front of him and let his hands wrap around my waist gently as he pulled me into an embrace—the same kind of embrace that started all of this trouble in the first place today. This time he deepened the kiss until his tongue slipped into my mouth; a moment later both of our bodies went limp against each other as our lips stayed pressed together longer than any director would have been comfortable with during filming...but luckily no one saw us except for Claire who rolled her eyes at us like always after taking her 5th photo of us making out today (or was it her 6th?). And she kept shooting photos until at last she stopped yelling “Cut! Great work guys…that will make great TV! Here is your water bottle Fourth….and Jillian here is your cookie…have a nice break together before you have to shoot some more stuff next week!"
