·
Published 7/2/2023In ancient Alexandria, Binti, a fearless and audacious young woman, risks her life to pilfer a forbidden artifact from a Pharaoh's tomb, only to find herself pursued by relentless guards. With her quick-witted best friend Kahedja and a charismatic parrot named Tepi, they embark on a perilous journey along the Nile, encountering mysterious forces and diverse locals speaking explosive dialects. As they face mounting obstacles, Binti must confront her innermost fears and outsmart her pursuers to restore the precious relic to its rightful place. Will she triumph against all odds or be doomed to forever bear the weight of her audacious choice?

"Binti, I think we're lost."
"No Kahedja, we're not lost, we're just very far away from where we want to be. But that's the point, isn't it?" Binti smiled and took another swig from her wineskin. "I mean, if I wanted to be in Damascus selling my wares like all the other Arabian women in this caravan, then I would have been."
Kahedja shook his head as he bit into an apple. He spotted a pomegranate carefully wrapped in cloth on the cart and offered it to Binti.
"Thank you," she said, her voice soft and sweet. She unwrapped the fruit and took a bite. A trickle of red juice ran down her chin and dripped onto her white gown. She licked at the spillage with her tongue and smiled again at Kahedja. "At least the Nile is beautiful."
The Nile was indeed beautiful, flowing lazily through the green fields of Egypt in a powerful rush towards its mysterious destination. The blue sky held no clouds except for a few wisps here and there that looked like feathers hanging on the wind. The sun beat down harshly on the caravan but Kahedja had taken care to bring out umbrellas in case of rain or sun, which were now tied onto the side of their cart by one of his servants. The servant was now sound asleep under one of those umbrellas with his face turned up towards the sun and drool dripping from his mouth onto the ground underneath him. Even though it was mid-morning when they decided to stop for a break along the riverbank, everyone else seemed to be taking a nap as well: merchants lay sprawled out on their carts; camels stood dozing with their heads down as if deep in thought; even little children were fast asleep beside their mothers who were too tired from walking to pay any attention to them. Binti was soon joined by Tepi, who flew over to perch on her shoulder while he nibbled nimbly on half a date given by Binti earlier.
"You know Tepi," said Binti as she brushed some sand out of the parrot's tail feathers, "I don't know why people say that Egypt is such a dangerous place."
"Well Binti," replied Tepi, "people have got every right to call Egypt dangerous because it is!" He paused as both he and Binti shared a laugh. "But only because they don't know how to behave properly around here! It's all about knowing how things work in Cairo." Tepi ruffled his wings proudly before catching himself mid-frolic and remembering that he was supposed to be resting for once. He hopped off of Binti's shoulder and climbed back into his cage next to her cart where he promptly fell asleep again.
Binti watched Kahedja finish off his apple and roll up into his blanket like a mummy. "Sleep well my friend," she whispered softly as she closed her eyes and listened to the gentle murmur of the Nile flowing by them.
As the sun hung high in the sky, casting its relentless rays upon the idyllic scene, Binti's mind wandered to the bustling city of Cairo. The tantalizing tales she had heard of the grand bazaars, the opulent palaces, and the vibrant streets had fueled her wanderlust. Binti had always been a woman of curiosity, craving adventure and seeking the unknown. The thought of Damascus and its predictable routine had never captured her spirit, hence her decision to embark on this ambitious journey across the vast lands of North Africa.
Kahedja's gentle snores roused her from her reverie. She gazed at his slumbering form, a twinkle of mischief sparking in her hazel eyes. Carefully, she unsheathed herself from the comforts of a makeshift bed and tiptoed towards Kahedja. Concocting a mischievous plan in her mind, she picked up handfuls of sand and sprinkled them in his hair, letting the granules trickle down onto his sleeping form. Suppressing a giggle, she retreated to her own space, believing Kahedja none the wiser.
To her dismay, Kahedja stirred, his eyes fluttering open as he stifled a yawn. "Binti, did you think you could pull off such a trick on your humble friend?" He chuckled, sweeping the sand from his hair with a playful demeanor.
Binti's laughter filled the air, intertwining with the melody of the Nile. "You always know, don't you Kahedja? A true friend indeed!" The camaraderie between them had weathered the trials of this journey, adding a sense of joy to their otherwise lone expedition.
As the shadows grew longer, the caravan slowly stirred from its slumber. Merchants shuffled around, stretching their stiff limbs and rubbing the sleep from their eyes. The children, invigorated by dreams of wild adventures, darted across the riverbank, their laughter echoing through the air. One by one, they gathered around Binti and Kahedja, their eyes brimming with curiosity.
"Tell us a story, Binti!" one of the children pleaded, tugging at the hem of her flowing gown.
Binti's smile widened, her gaze taking in the eager faces surrounding her. She had always been fond of storytelling, mesmerizing listeners with her vivid imagination and animated gestures. With a graceful wave of her hand, she settled atop a nearby rock, her voice soft and melodic like the gentle current of the Nile.
"Once, in the bustling heart of Cairo, there lived a young girl named Layla. She had a spirit as wild as the desert winds, and her heart brimmed with the yearning for adventure. Like a shooting star streaking across the darkened sky, she dazzled whoever had the privilege to meet her. Layla refused to let the walls confined to her family's humble abode define her destiny. The forbidden tales of the outside world called out to her, luring her into the unknown."
The children leaned in closer, their wide eyes reflecting the flames of their imagination. Binti's voice carried them away into a tapestry of exotic lands, recounting Layla's daring escapades through sun-soaked souks and hidden oases.
As the last rays of the setting sun cast an orange glow upon their faces, Binti found solace in the unity that had blossomed among the travelers. The bonds they had forged were etched within the very fabric of their journey, weaving an intricate tapestry of shared experiences and heartfelt connections.
And so, beneath the watchful gaze of the Nile and the vibrant Egyptian sky, Binti and her companions embarked on a path far removed from the predictable and the mundane. In the heart of the ever-changing sands, they discovered that there was courage in embracing the unknown, and harmony in relinquishing the need for certainty. Their spirits intertwined with the vast expanse of North Africa, a testament to the transformative power of embracing the wild currents of life.
