Cart's Eye View: A Grocery Cart's Real-World Adventure
·
Published 7/6/2024The grocery cart, a metallic inhabitant of the grocery store parking lot, had long watched as customers hustled in and out of the store, buying their wares for the week. It was a lonely existence, never leaving its designated space at the front of the store. As the days wore on, it couldn’t help but wonder what life was like beyond those glass double doors.
One hot summer afternoon, a homeless man named George approached the shopping carts parked at their station. He made his way over to Grocery Cart. “Hey there,” he said with enthusiasm as he took hold of its handle.
George wheeled it across the blacktop to an empty corner of the parking lot where his belongings were piled high within a shopping cart graveyard.
“Why did you choose me?” Grocery Cart asked curiously.
“You looked like you wanted an adventure,” George said with a smile as he began sifting through his belongings.
Grocery Cart felt a sense of excitement washing over it as George rummaged through some boxes and pulled out an old bandana and piece of rope. Before long, George had fashioned a makeshift sail on top of Grocery Cart, securing it to either side with pieces of twine.
“There we go,” George said proudly once he was finished. He climbed onto Grocery Cart’s child seat and kicked off with his feet. The cart lurched forward before picking up speed as they glided across the hot pavement toward an abandoned warehouse nearby.
For hours, they sailed back and forth across that deserted sea until finally they returned to their starting position in exhaustion.
“That was amazing!” Grocery Cart exclaimed as George climbed out from beneath him. “I can’t believe how fast we were going!”
George chuckled, wiping sweat from his brow. “It sure is something special when you can forget about your troubles for just a little while.”
As night fell and stars began to fill the sky above them, George turned to Grocery Cart with a sigh. “Guess we should get you back home, huh?”
Grocery Cart nodded sadly as George began removing the makeshift sail. Once he was finished, George kissed his fingers and pressed them against the cart before mumbling a quiet thank you.
With a sudden surge of emotion from his simple gesture, Grocery Cart found itself overcome with sadness as it sat silently in the darkness after George had left.
Days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months until one sunny morning during summer vacation when Grocery Cart noticed a group of kids approaching. They were carrying backpacks filled with snacks and water bottles clanked together as they walked. It seemed to be another adventure was about to occur.
The kids huddled around Grocery Cart, their faces full of excitement and wonderment.
“What do you think?” Timmy said proudly as he showed the others his treasure map that had been doodled on notebook paper.
Susie smiled, adjusting her oversized straw hat. “It looks like ‘X’ marks the spot right next to our friend here.”
Grocery Cart felt its wheels tingle with anticipation as the kids began to plan their escapades. They talked about pirates and buried treasure while examining their walkie-talkies for secret pirate transmissions.
“We’ll be back before sunset,” Emily announced definitively as she climbed onto Grocery Cart’s child seat.
Off they went in search of adventure, exploring every nook and cranny of that vacant lot in hopes of finding something—anything—that would lead them to hidden riches.
As the hours dragged on without success, Emily grew disappointed. “I don’t think there’s any treasure here,” she sighed, looking out across the vast expanse of gravel and asphalt laid out before them.
Just then, Susie perked up from where she was digging through a mound of sand nearby. “Guys! I think I found something!”
Excitement filled the air once more as Susie held up a tarnished old coin for all to see.
“Great job, Susie!” Timmy exclaimed as they gathered around. “Let me see if it’s real.”
With a twinkle in his eye, Timmy held the coin up high and let it fall, catching it in his hand before flipping it onto the back of his other. When he lifted his hand, a genuine treasure map lay before them.
“I knew it!” Emily said with enthusiasm shining through her eyes. “We’re going to be rich!”
The kids quickly regrouped and set off once more, following the map that led them on an epic journey across the vacant lot. It was filled with secret tunnels and rope ladders that took them from one hidden treasure to another.
As sunset neared, they returned to where their adventure had begun. They looked down at a pile of coins and jewels that sparkled in the fading sunlight.
“We did it!” Timmy exclaimed victoriously as they high-fived each other.
Grocery Cart felt an overwhelming sense of joy as the kids celebrated their victory. It basked in their triumph, grateful for having been included in such an amazing experience.
Once again, its happiness turned to melancholy as the light began to fade from the sky above, and with heavy hearts, they each shared a goodbye—just in case they never saw each other again.
The cart sat alone once more as night fell over the parking lot until one fateful day when Grocery Cart finally got its own adventure.
An ambulance pulled into its home at the grocery store one afternoon alongside a line of shopping carts ready for duty. The EMTs opened up the back doors to find George lying motionless on top of Grocery Cart’s flattened child seat.
“What do you think?” one EMT asked nonchalantly as if asking about lunch plans on their next break. “Heart attack?”
“It sure looks like it,” the other EMT replied, not bothering to check for a pulse.
They quickly loaded George into the back of the ambulance before slamming the doors shut and zipping away without so much as a glance toward Grocery Cart.
As they sped down the street, sirens wailing, George’s eyes fluttered open. He turned his head to see Grocery Cart sitting empty next to him.
“Sorry about this, my friend,” he whispered with a grin before reaching out and giving the cart a gentle pat.
Grocery Cart watched as it faded into the distance. Surprisingly, there was no sadness that washed over it like there had been when George had first kissed his fingers and pressed them against its frame.
Instead, there was only a sense of peace knowing that in some small way, it had brought happiness and adventure to those around it.
And as Grocery Cart sat alone in the back of that speeding ambulance going who knows where, for the first time in its existence, it couldn’t help but feel excited about what lay ahead.
