“That’s all I could think of.”
I looked down at my phone to check the date again. This was supposed to be my anniversary with my girlfriend, but instead she had just dumped me twenty minutes ago. And this was her breakup speech. I wasn’t sure if I should laugh or cry. Either way, I didn’t like the way this breakup was going.
“I mean, does that have anything to do with why we broke up, or what led up to it? Was there any specific event or incident that led us to this point?”
“No, no, nothing specific. It’s just a long list of little things and reasons that added up to being too much for me. It was all about the little things for me. A lot of them aren’t even worth mentioning now that I look back on it all.”
She sounded so sure of herself as she said it though, like this had been a carefully planned out speech and not some random collection of thoughts thrown together at the last minute. I didn’t know whether to take this seriously or not. She had always been very persuasive when she wanted to be, and here she sounded so sure of herself that I couldn’t help but believe her.
Maybe I really did suck as a boyfriend. Maybe everything she said was true. Maybe it really is all my fault that we broke up, and maybe she doesn’t deserve any of the blame for it at all.
