Catherine stood in the parking lot of the mall, fuming. She couldn’t believe what just happened. Jason had blown her off for his brother. She couldn’t believe it.
She slowly reached into her purse, her hands shaking as she pulled out her phone and pressed the contacts button.
It rang twice before he picked up, but Catherine didn’t give him a chance to speak.
“Dad? I need you to pick me up from work. Jason blew me off for his brother, and I’m not feeling well. I don’t want to ride the bus home,” she said quickly, angry tears streaming down her cheeks as she began walking toward the food court.
“Okay honey, I can be there in fifteen minutes. Are you sure you don’t want me to call your mom?” Her dad asked in his soothing voice, “Jason would never blow you off like that honey; he must have an explanation for it. You know your mother would be happy to hear from you after so long.”
Catherine sighed sadly, “I know Dad…but honestly, can we just not talk about this right now? I have too much on my mind right now to think about that stuff…please Dad? Can we just not talk about Mom or Jason right now?”
Her father sighed on the other end, “Alright honey…I won’t say anything about your mother or Jason until tomorrow when we can talk about it calmly…but only if you promise me that you will eat something tonight so that you won’t get sick! Okay? And don’t forget to take your vitamins either!” He added sternly.
Catherine laughed at his sudden parental concern, “Okay Dad…I love you too…see you soon!” She replied as she hung up and continued toward the food court.
As she walked, she thought back over the last month with Jason and how happy they had been together. They had been dating secretly since May, and despite all of the drama with his parents and their disapproval of their relationship, they had managed to stay strong through it all and were still going strong even after a month of them living together at his new place in town. After all of that time together though, they hadn't even kissed yet...and after today's events, Catherine wasn't sure that they ever could kiss each other again without causing more drama than they were prepared for...she sighed sadly as she approached one of her favorite restaurants, a small Italian place where she always stopped when shopping at the mall alone; she never minded stopping by here alone because everyone who worked there knew her personally; she was practically family to them all...especially Mr. Gatto himself: The owner of the store who always treated her like a daughter or granddaughter whenever she came by for food or some fresh pastries for her dad or sometimes herself to enjoy later on at home when she was bored or lonely...

Mr. Gatto was sitting behind his desk in his office as usual while his son Giancarlo "Gino" was working behind the counter when Mr. Gatto's phone rang loudly startling him out of a pleasant daydream involving memories of his youth with his wife. He smiled as he pulled himself out of his reverie before answering the phone and asked Gino to make sure that this wasn't an unwanted prank call.
His thoughts turned to his two sons, Angelo and Stefano, both of whom had grown up feuding with each other constantly, often over areas such as money or women. Although he loved both of his sons equally, their arguments pained him deeply. Mr. Gatto desperately wanted to avoid any further trouble today, especially with Christmas around the corner. Despite trying not to think about it, something kept drawing him back to thoughts of Christmas, making him realize how important the season truly was to him. He decided it might be a good idea to take a short nap and refocus his thoughts on getting everything ready for the upcoming holiday.

Catherine entered the Italian restaurant, and observed Mr. Gatto engrossed in paperwork at his desk, while a young blonde woman stood beside him doing the same thing. She thought it was strange considering that the restaurant was usually bustling with activity during dinnertime. Located within one of America's busiest shopping malls and across the street from one of the largest amusement parks called "Tropical Splash," many people enjoyed eating delicious pasta dishes as they watched alligators, crocodiles, and piranha fish swimming around them in an artificial lagoon. Some adventurous kids would even attempt to feed the animals with pieces of bread, occasionally landing themselves in dangerous situations. Catherine knew that despite these occasional incidents, the restaurant had always managed to stand tall in the face of adversity.
As Catherine approached the counter, Gino looked up and greeted her with a warm smile. "Catherine! How are you today? Long time no see, huh?"
Catherine returned the smile, grateful for the familiarity in such a confusing time. "Hey, Gino. Yeah, it's been a while. How's everything going?"
Gino sighed and shrugged. "Same old, same old. But hey, we're still serving up the best pasta in town, so that's something, right?"
Catherine chuckled, her anger slowly dissipating as she watched Gino's upbeat demeanor. "Yeah, you guys always manage to brighten up my day. Can I get my usual, please?"
"Of course! No problem. The usual it is," Gino said, turning to prepare Catherine's order.
Catherine took a seat at one of the corner tables near the lagoon, where she could see the vibrant fish swimming lazily in the water. She couldn't help but feel a sense of calm wash over her. The familiar surroundings provided solace and stability in a world that felt chaotic and uncertain.
As she waited, her thoughts drifted back to Jason and his sudden cancellation of their plans. It hurt her deeply, and she couldn't shake off the feeling of betrayal. Hadn't she given him her heart and trust, only to be tossed aside for his brother? It made her question everything they had built together, and whether it was worth holding onto.
Catherine's phone buzzed, bringing her back to reality. She glanced down to see a message from her dad. "Here in a few minutes, honey. Just hang tight. Love you!" The simple words warmed her heart, reminding her of the unwavering support and love she had in her life.
Gino approached with a steaming plate of pasta, breaking her train of thought. "Here you go, Catherine. Just like you remember it."
Catherine smiled gratefully, inhaling the fragrant aroma of garlic and tomato sauce. She picked up her fork and began twirling strands of spaghetti, lost in the comforting embrace of delicious flavors.
As she savored each bite, Mr. Gatto emerged from his office, a tired smile plastered on his face. He shuffled over to Catherine's table and greeted her. "Ah, Catherine! It's so good to see you, my dear. How have you been?"
Catherine swallowed her mouthful and replied, "Mr. Gatto, it's always a pleasure to see you. I've had better days, but I'm hanging in there."
Mr. Gatto's eyes softened with concern. "I'm sorry to hear that, my dear. If there's anything you need, you know you can always count on us here at the restaurant."
Catherine nodded, touched by his genuine kindness. "Thank you, Mr. Gatto. That means a lot to me. This place has always felt like a second home to me."
Mr. Gatto's smile brightened as he patted Catherine's hand. "And you will always be considered part of our family. That will never change."
As Catherine finished her meal, she felt a renewed sense of strength and hope. The world may have been chaotic, but within the walls of this Italian restaurant, she found a sense of stability and belonging.
With a sense of determination settling within her, Catherine knew that she couldn't let the events of the day overshadow all the happiness she had experienced with Jason. Perhaps it was time to give him the benefit of the doubt and have an honest conversation. After all, every relationship had its ups and downs. And maybe, just maybe, they could overcome this obstacle together.
As she stood to leave, her dad walked through the entrance, a smile spreading across his face when he saw Catherine. She embraced him tightly, feeling a surge of gratitude for the unwavering love and support her family provided.
"Let's go, honey. I've got you," her dad whispered, and Catherine knew that everything would be alright. Together, they walked out of the restaurant, leaving behind a world of uncertainties and stepping into a future filled with hope and possibility.
