Sabina's Curious Creature Quest
·
Published 4/12/2023In 5th century Mediterranean, a determined but light-hearted mother, Sabina, and her nomadic family must brave superstition and strange creatures to uncover the powerful, hidden forces below the mysterious landscape in their imaginative, and possibly perilous, quest.
"Cats, cats, cats...," Sabina repeated to herself. The sign was up for a week now.
"Cats, cats, cats...," said Sabina again as she looked at the cat-like creatures on the sign. Then her eyes darted around to survey her surroundings. "I shouldn't have brought the children here."
"Why not?" asked the eldest of the kids: Ronny. "What's wrong with this place?" He took a step forward. "Maybe there are real cats here!" he exclaimed and ran toward the sign and stared at it intently.
"No, no! Please don't approach them," Sabina said, trying to pull him back. "They look very dangerous." She turned to the younger ones by her side. "You all stay here."
"Those creatures look like those my dad used to tell us about when we were young," said Ruben. "The ones that would get you if you didn't wake up before sunrise or if you touched them."
Sabina frowned and looked at her husband who was standing by, scratching his head in confusion.
"And what do you plan on doing with this new discovery?" she asked rhetorically when she saw that he had nothing but confusion written all over his face. "A few old tales and superstitions? This is serious business!" Her voice rose as she spoke, getting louder by each word. "If they are indeed real, those creatures could be worth millions!" And with that she gestured for him to follow her toward the big sign-board near their car where they parked earlier that day. She scrutinized it for a minute and then pointed at a small line of writing below those strange figures of animals with no fur or hair - creatures which didn't look even remotely like cats or any animal known to man - "For Sale." She then turned around and started walking back toward the creatures and her family left behind in utter disbelief.
"Let's go get some pizza," David said as he threw his arms around his wide-eyed children who stood rooted on the spot staring at their mother in awe, who was now making her way towards those odd looking creatures with curiosity written all over her face, with David right behind her.
Sabina walked straight toward one of those cat-like creatures and touched it lightly with her right index finger. The creature didn't budge an inch and Sabina seemed visibly frustrated by its lack of response to her touch; so much so that she decided to speak out loud to it: "Hello? Are you alive?" Still no response from it, only silence from Ronny who was close behind her, almost laughing out loud in disbelief at what he saw unfold in front of him; but being five years old, he kept quiet and watched his mother carefully examining this odd looking creature standing in front of them for sale.
Ronny observed his mother closely caressing the creature gently with both hands now, completely engrossed in her interactions with these peculiar beings. After several minutes passed, Sabina turned around towards David who had been standing quite close by, watching quietly with amusement across his face while thinking: "What sort of surreal situation have we found ourselves in? It's as if these otherworldly creatures have appeared out of nowhere and captured Sabina's curiosity."
As Ronny stood there, he realized that despite the initial fear instilled in him by his father's childhood warnings about mysterious creatures, perhaps these 'cats' were not a threat after all. At least, not today, and maybe not ever. With time, he thought to himself that he might even come to understand his mother's fascination with these strange animals.
With mixed emotions swirling within the family, they continued exploring the uncanny world of these enigmatic 'cats', leaving wonder and disbelief in their wake.
