Aang's Salty Victory
·
Published 5/27/2023Sassy 17th-Century hero Avatar Aang takes on the formidable Beyonc and an oppressive military force to save his home from enslavement, charming everyone in his path with his wit and heartfelt determination in this invigorating imaginative adventure.

Aang's eyes shot open at the sound of a loud crash and the shouts of men. He sat up in his bed, breathing heavily as he looked around the room. The sun was just peeking through the curtains and he could feel that it was just before sunrise.
He thought back to his dream as he gathered his clothes from the floor and dressed himself. Aang wondered what it all meant, if it meant anything at all. He had fallen asleep thinking about Master Katara and her inability to stop flirting with him, even when she was married to the water tribe chief, Sokka. There was nothing in this world that would change her mind about that. In her defense, she did have a point about Sokka's silly obsession with meat and bison jerky; who could ever find that attractive?
Aang sighed, clasping his glider staff tightly in his hand as he crept down the hallway. As he got closer to the door to his father’s study, he heard voices louder than before. They were muffled but they were definitely not normal voices. Aang slowly pushed open the door, seeing two masked men standing over his father’s desk, holding him down on top of the wooden surface while they searched through the drawers underneath him.
It was a dangerous situation and Aang knew he had to act quickly if he wanted any chance at survival. He didn't know who these men were or why they had broken into their house at such a strange hour of the morning, but one thing was for sure: they weren't here for tea and conversation. Aang took off into the room, sprinting across the room towards them.
“Hey! What do you think you're doing!?” Aang shouted as he slammed his glider staff down onto one of their heads, causing him to stumble backwards away from their target. His father jumped up from the desk with a yelp, turning around to see what all the commotion was about. The other thief turned around angrily towards Aang, taking a wide swing at him with his fist outstretched towards Aang's face.
Aang ducked under the man's arm easily and punched him hard in the ribs with a swift jab before jumping back out of range again. The thief crumpled to his knees as Aang reached behind himself and pulled out two short blades from his belt loops and rushed towards them once more. The other thief had recovered from being struck by Aang's glider staff and lunged at him from behind with a long dagger raised over his head ready to plunge deep into Aang's backside with one fell swoop if Aang didn't react quickly enough again.
Aang twirled around suddenly, swiping both of his swords together around him like a pinwheel until they made contact with each end of the thief's dagger handle causing him to lose grip of his weapon which clattered onto the wood floor loudly near where they were standing before rolling away into an adjacent hallway nearby where it came to rest against another piece of furniture there quietly.
With their main weapons gone, the thieves struggled to comprehend just how outmatched they were. As this realization dawned on them, they began to consider surrender. Aang stood tall, with a look of fierce determination in his eyes that warned them not to try anything further. As minutes passed, still no reinforcements appeared to aid the intruders; it seemed they were well and truly beaten.
The sight of Aang standing victoriously over the defeated thieves made his father proud, knowing that his son was capable of defending the family home in times of peril. Their brief moment of glory, however, did little to address Aang's lingering thoughts regarding Master Katara.
He would continue to question her flirtatious behavior and his own inability to respond, wondering if they shared a deeper connection than either of them realized. Dreams and waking moments alike were filled with thoughts and fantasies about their potential life together, far away from the world they currently knew.
Years later, Aang would look back on this chapter of his life with mixed emotions – pride in his abilities to protect his family, but also a sense of longing for something he couldn't quite define. All he knew was that those dreams of Master Katara and an alternative destiny would accompany him into the future, the images forever etched into both his mind and heart.
