“Hey Farrah,” said my mom. “How was your day?”

“Oh, you know, same old,” I replied.

I took off my pinafore and hung it on the coat hanger. I turned back to look at my mom who was just putting her purse on the kitchen table. She looked so tired. The bags under her eyes were bigger than my little brother’s backpack and she had a permanent frown plastered on her face.

“Is everything alright?” I asked as I sat down on one of the chairs and began massaging my calves. “You seem like you need a drink or two.”

My mom walked over to the cabinet and pulled out a bottle of whiskey. She then reached into the fridge and retrieved two glasses before sitting across from me at the table. She poured in some whiskey into both glasses until they were almost full. Before handing me one of them, she put in a few ice cubes.

“Here you go, honey,” she said with a smile that didn’t seem real at all. “You deserve it after babysitting your little brother again today. How many times do I have to tell you not to take him there alone? You could have been robbed or worse! And don’t talk about money with him near your ear!.” She shook her head before taking a sip of her drink: “What are you doing with yourself these days anyway? Still studying for that test? I told you that you don’t have to study every night! You should be spending time with your friends instead! At least we got you to smile once in awhile now! Do you want me to start calling your ‘shy girl’ nickname again? That always makes you smile!”

I took a deep breath before answering: “No thanks mom, I like Farrah better than Sarah anyhow but if it makes you happy, she can call me whatever she wants as long as she lets me stay here with Sadiq tonight...and by the way, how is Sadiq doing anyway? Is he still alive? Actually, how come he never visits us anymore? He hasn't visited us in ages! Maybe I could have asked him out for dinner or something but now it's too late because he isn't even here anymore but I'm sure he'll be here soon enough for dinner so maybe I'll ask him then if he wants to go somewhere else for dessert instead or maybe if...*sigh*...I just want to get through this dinner first before thinking about dessert so please mom can we just eat dinner already!? I'm starving...and by the way where's dad? Isn't he going to be joining us too?"

"Farrah," my mom said while trying not to laugh: "You're rambling again sweetheart." She sighed before continuing: "Your dad just went out for his usual walk around town so he should be back anytime soon." Then she raised an eyebrow: "And why do you want Sadiq staying here with us anyways?" When she saw me blush, she smiled knowingly: "Oh no...don't tell me that you're actually interested in playing doctor with him again! This is why I hate letting him stay over at our place: because of all those things that happened last time when I wasn't home!" She shook her head before adding: "And don't forget that you're supposed to be studying hard for your test next week!"
