Friends for the Journey: Ella Edwards’ Wild Ride
·
Published 1/12/2023Tired of her monotonous life, Forty-something Ella Edwards embarks on a hilarious, yet captivating, cross-country roadtrip with her old flame, Alastair, and a unique ensemble of characters, discovering along the way that irregardless of life's changes, some friendships endure and are worth cherishing.
It was the beginning of the 20th century in rural New Zealand and stubborn Ella Edwards in her forties was living a dull and tedious life, changing patterns which evolved around the sun. Until one day when she met an old flame from years ago - Alastair McAllister - for a chance encounter that ultimately led to a totally unexpected journey.
At first, Ella was uncertain - her life had become too familiar and safe, and she wasn't sure yet if she was ready for something more. But there was a mischievous spark in her eye, and she was drawn in. Taking an old map from the bottom of a pastel box, Ella and Alastair set out on a winding path to the North Island of New Zealand - in a quest to explore and rediscover the beauty of the unknown.
In the beginning, their travels were filled with moments of discovering vibrant culture and landscapes, and taking in the culture and its surprise beauty. It almost felt like they were discovering the world all anew, while finding out more about each other and developing a deeper companionship.
As they continued on, they picked up some rather unusual characters along the way: an elderly gentleman and scoundrel named Ted Morgan, and a teenager called Cody who had run away from his family and was seeking to recreate himself. Accompanied by these two unlikely adventurers, Ella and Alastair weren't just seeing more of New Zealand - they were seeing more of the world and each other too.
Venturing from one village to the next, the adventure went from a physical one to an emotional one. Along the way, lessons of understanding and discovery, joy and sorrow, and ordinary life's wonders brought about deep changes, both for the characters individually as well as for their relationship with each other.
By the time Ella and Alastair finished their journey - a journey that had taken them from the quaint traditional village and wide open pastures of the North Island, to the bustling and vibrant cities of New Zealand - they had come to understand something deeply true. Through friendship, they become aware that no matter where they are in the world, and no matter how life changes, life has been made beautiful in the meaning and understanding that you carry home.
When Ella and Alastair finally returned home, they left behind the adventure and the wildness of their travels, but the friendship they found on the journey -a friendship that had blossomed into something far greater - the two of them now understood was something much more invaluable to hold on to. Through the humor and wit of their banter, thoughtful conversations, and moments that were funny and poignant, they had come to form a connection that neither of them ever expected. That was the gift they brought home with them - and in the life they created together, it was one of the greatest treasures.
