I don't like this. I don't like this one bit. I can feel it. The air around me is different. It's as if it's on the verge of something, but what?

The house sits in the middle of a field. The grass is long and overgrown. The windows are boarded up and unkempt ivy covers the stones of the walls. Last night, I was driving home from London when a police officer waved me down. He said that someone reported seeing lights flashing from inside the house at 3 am yesterday morning. He said he checked out the place, but nothing was there.

I'm not sure what to make of it. I can't help but think about my mother and father, who were found dead in this house 25 years ago when I was little boy. They were never able to figure out how it happened. They think my parents died from carbon monoxide poisoning from a faulty heater in the basement, but they never confirmed that theory because they never found the body of my dog, Toby, who was with them in the basement when they died.

He was my best friend growing up and we did everything together. When I would wake up in the middle of the night, he'd be right next to my bed keeping me company until I went back to sleep or until morning came around. Not being able to get any answers has haunted me all these years. What really happened here? Why am I still here?

I feel an overwhelming sense of dread wash over me as I walk through the front door, which has been left unlocked for some reason. Maybe someone else is here or maybe that cop forgot to lock it after he left last night? Either way, now that I'm inside, I've no desire to turn around and go back outside into whatever small town lies just outside this place.

As I step into the foyer, the lights flicker on and off several times before turning off completely. In their place are candles scattered throughout the entryway and a low light continues to flicker from somewhere deeper inside of the house in one corner of room where there's a winding staircase leading up to a balcony above me that overlooks a large room with a fireplace at its center.

I look around for a moment before searching for a light switch somewhere behind me. My heart begins pounding faster in my chest as I begin frantically searching for some kind of source of light so I can see where I'm going and get out of here as quickly as possible once my eyes adjust to the dark again.

"Hello?" I call out into darkness without turning away from my search for something - anything - that could provide illumination at least temporarily so I can find my way out of this place before whatever else is in here with me decides that it wants to meet me too...
