Published 7/8/2023In a strict Iron Age society where conformity reigns, spirited Aoife disguises herself as a diaper-clad child and stows away on her father's trading ship, embarking on a whimsical adventure across the galaxy. Along the way, Aoife embraces her inner quirkiness, forms unlikely alliances, and overcomes terrifying obstacles while discovering the true power of individuality. As she faces an alarming pirate capture and navigates through a treacherous desert mirage, Aoife's astonishing journey challenges societal norms and ignites the question: can she rewrite her destiny and prove that embracing one's unique qualities is the ultimate quest worth pursuing?

"Well, you're a right strange one," the pirate captain said as he eyed me up and down.
I was standing in his cabin feeling uneasy under his gaze. He had just finished questioning me before he decided to lock me up in the brig.
"Now, I'll ask you again. What were you doing on my ship?"
"I need to get to Xnj."
"Xnj? What's in Xnj?"
"I don't know."
He sighed heavily, "This is going to take longer than I thought." He then turned around and grabbed a bottle from the shelf behind him. After putting down his cup, he poured himself another drink and downed it in one gulp. "If you want to get some information out of me," he said as he refilled his cup, "you're going to have to answer my questions."
I wasn't sure what he meant by that, but it seemed like a reasonable tradeoff so I nodded.
"Well then," he said looking down at me over the brim of his cup, "what are you doing here on this planet? You don't look like you belong here." He took another sip and added, "Not that I particularly care who belongs or doesn't belong here."
After thinking for a moment I replied with a question of my own: "What do you mean by that?"
He looked surprised at my response. "Well for starters," he said as he walked over to me and started examining my hair, "your hair is purple and that's weird around these parts." He continued staring at my hair until I giggled nervously. Then he proceeded to examine my clothes. "And those clothes aren't made from any local material either. See how they float around your body? They're probably lighter than air or something like that." His eyes then focused on my face while he circled around me taking in every detail of my appearance. When he was done inspecting me, he stopped right in front of me and stared straight into my eyes. Suddenly I felt like I was being scoped out for something...or someone...but for what or whom? It didn't matter though because before I knew it, the pirate captain had grabbed both my shoulders and pushed me roughly against the wall next to us where we were now face-to-face. He cocked his head slightly and sniffed at the air that escaped from between us into his nostrils where it detected something interesting. His expression suddenly changed from curiosity to one of surprise and horror as his grip loosened enough for me to wriggle out of his hold. All the while, I could hear him muttering something about oddities and other strange creatures when all too suddenly...he passed out cold on the floor!
I stood there in shock, staring down at the unconscious pirate captain. The sudden turn of events had left me feeling even more bewildered than before. What had just happened? Why did he react so strongly to my presence?
Shaking off my confusion, I cautiously approached the fallen captain and knelt down beside him. Concern filled me as I observed his pale face, his breathing shallow and irregular. It didn't seem as though he would be waking up anytime soon. I couldn't help but wonder what had caused this unexpected reaction.
As I pondered over the situation, a small, nearly imperceptible noise caught my attention. It was the creaking of the cabin door. I spun around, heart pounding, to find a man standing in the doorway. Dressed in a worn-out sailor's attire, his weathered face portrayed a mix of astonishment and skepticism.
"You... you're the one who managed to knock out Captain Baird?" the man asked, his voice filled with disbelief.
Interpreting his words as an accusation, I hurriedly defended myself. "No, I didn't do anything! He just... collapsed. I don't know why."
The stranger's eyes narrowed as he studied me for a moment, then he stepped forward, crouching down beside the fallen captain. Without a word, he began examining him, expertly checking his pulse and assessing his condition.
"He's still alive, thank the stars," the stranger murmured, relief evident in his voice. He then turned his attention back to me, his gaze now softened with curiosity rather than suspicion. "Who are you, and what on earth did you do to Captain Baird?"
I hurriedly explained my situation, recounting my arrival on this planet and my desperate need to reach Xnj. As I spoke, the stranger listened intently, his features gradually growing more thoughtful.
"Xnj, you say?" he mused. "That's a dangerous place for someone like you. It's not a destination many dare to venture to, and those who do rarely return."
My heart sank at his words, a mixture of fear and determination welling up within me. "But I have to go," I insisted. "There's something... someone... waiting for me."
The stranger regarded me silently for a moment, his gaze penetrating. Finally, he nodded. "Very well. It seems fate has brought us together for a reason. I am Captain Malone, and I might just be able to assist you. But first, we need to ensure Captain Baird is taken care of."
Together, we carefully lifted the unconscious pirate captain and laid him on his bed, making him as comfortable as possible. Captain Malone then turned to face me, a newfound determination in his eyes.
"If we are to help each other, we must first uncover the mystery behind your presence here," he declared. "There's much more to this planet than meets the eye, and I suspect you hold the key to unlocking its secrets. Are you willing to trust me?"
Although I hardly knew Captain Malone, the sincerity in his voice and the sense of purpose that radiated from him instilled a sense of trust within me. I nodded, my resolve strengthening.
"Then let us embark on this journey together," Captain Malone said, a hint of excitement lacing his words. "We shall uncover the truth behind Xnj, and with any luck, find the answers you seek."
I couldn't help but feel a glimmer of hope. Perhaps, with Captain Malone's guidance and my unexplained presence on this planet, we could explore the enigma of Xnj and discover the fate that awaited me there. Little did I know that this newfound alliance would plunge us into a world of danger, adventure, and extraordinary discoveries that would forever change our lives. As I looked at Captain Baird, still unconscious on his bed, I knew that this was only the beginning of a remarkable journey—one that would challenge us in ways we could never have imagined.
