Akshay’s eyes were fixated on my body. I could feel his gaze burning a hole in my skin. He was biting his lip, sucking it in between his teeth and letting it go again. I wasn’t sure if I liked the way he looked at me. It was as though he was undressing me with his eyes.

I might be new to this influencer thing but I knew enough to know that Akshay was probably staring at me because he saw me as some kind of a sexual object. I didn’t like the way he looked at me.

“So you want to make a deal?” I asked him, trying to break the silence.

He snapped out of whatever trance he was in and smiled at me. “Yes, definitely. Let’s get down to business now that we are all here, shall we?” He said as he looked around the room.

Akshay had invited me to his office in Bandra for what he called a “business meeting”. The only other person in the room besides Akshay and myself was a man who had introduced himself as Akshay’s assistant Jai. His role was almost telepathic – whenever Akshay needed something done, Jai seemed to appear out of nowhere, ready and willing to help him out.

The large conference table in the middle of the luxurious office had been covered with files and brochures advertising different models and their talent agencies. There were pictures of people posing at exotic locations around the world as they took selfies and put them up on social media platforms such as Instagram and Twitter – showcasing their cool lifestyles, their beautiful faces and perfect bodies.

I had asked Jai when we first met what exactly an influencer agency did. He had stared at me blankly for a few seconds before saying: “We manage influencers so that they can influence people on social media platforms for brands or products which pay us money for making these connections happen.”

He paused after speaking those words and asked me what exactly I meant by asking him what an influencer agency did. When I told him about my conversation with Akshay earlier that day, Jai explained what an influencer actually is – a person who influences others to buy products or follow trends on social media without any financial incentive involved whatsoever but just because she is influencing them towards doing so because she has the right number of followers on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook etcetera etcetera… That made sense to me – my sister Sanya always used to tell me that if you want something done right, do it yourself! So why would anyone want to follow someone else who doesn’t even have anything interesting or personal to say unless they are paid or forced into doing so? It just didn’t make sense!

Then Jai went on explaining how an influencer managed to influence others – through ads which were produced especially for them by various brands who wanted those ads to be seen by thousands of people immediately – not just within India but also overseas because many Indians lived abroad too who would be happy seeing Indian celebrities acting cool and drinking coke; or running shoes; or mobile phones; or perfume, clothes or whatever else they wanted sold… These celebrities put up photos of themselves doing super cool stuff while wearing those brands clothes/shoes/etcetera which made people feel special that they too could wear clothes made by these brands without having their favourite stars wear them first etcetera etcetera… And then these brands gave money to these celebrities for promoting their products on social media… And everybody won! The influencers earned money from putting up pictures of themselves wearing those products; the brands earned money from getting more sales through celebrity endorsements; and the fans got excited seeing their favourite stars being endorsed by various brands because they thought it made them cooler too!

As Jai finished explaining the intricacies of influencer marketing, I couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement mixed with apprehension. The world of social media had always fascinated me, with its power to connect people, create trends, and influence behavior. And now, here I was, sitting in Akshay's office, presented with the opportunity to become a part of this phenomenon.

Akshay leaned back in his chair, his eyes flickering with amusement. "So, what do you think, Maya? Do you want to join our agency and become one of our influencers?"

I hesitated for a moment, weighing the pros and cons. Becoming an influencer meant delving into a world where appearances were paramount, where sharing every aspect of your life with others was the norm. It was a lifestyle that demanded constant attention and scrutiny. But deep down, I knew that I had the ability to leave a mark on people, to inspire them and make a difference. And isn't that what being an influencer was all about?

With resolve in my voice, I looked at Akshay and said, "Yes, I want to join. But on my own terms. I want to use this platform to share meaningful stories, promote authenticity, and inspire positive change. I don't want to be just another pretty face endorsing products for money."

Akshay raised an eyebrow, intrigued by my words. "Interesting," he murmured. "Tell me, Maya, what kind of stories do you want to tell?"

I took a deep breath, gathering my thoughts. "I want to share stories of resilience and courage. Stories that shed light on important social issues and encourage empathy. I believe people are hungry for genuine connections, and I want to provide them with content that makes them think, reflect, and take action."

Akshay leaned forward, a spark of potential shining in his eyes. "You have a unique vision, Maya. And I appreciate that. Let's give it a go, then. Together, we can create something remarkable."

As I left the meeting, the magnitude of what lay ahead hit me. My journey as an influencer was just beginning, and I was determined to make it count. I spent hours brainstorming ideas, planning out content that would reflect my values and evoke meaningful conversations. With each post, I strived to break through the noise of superficiality and create a space where authenticity and vulnerability could thrive. And slowly, but surely, my audience grew.

Over time, I became acquainted with a community of like-minded influencers who, like me, were passionate about making a difference. We collaborated on projects, amplifying each other's messages, and using our collective influence to uplift causes close to our hearts. Together, we launched a campaign to raise awareness about mental health, partnering with organizations that provided support to those in need. The response was overwhelming, as people from all walks of life rallied behind our cause, sharing their personal stories and offering solace to others.

As my online presence grew, so did the opportunities beyond the digital realm. I found myself invited to speak at conferences and engagements, where I shared my insights on the power of social media and the responsibility that came with it. People began to see influencers as more than just trendsetters or brand ambassadors; they saw us as vehicles of change, capable of shaping society for the better.

Through it all, I remained grounded, never losing sight of my original intentions. I didn't let the trappings of fame distract me from my true purpose. And as much as I enjoyed the perks that came with being an influencer, it was the impact I had on people's lives that fueled me the most.

It wasn't always smooth sailing, of course. There were moments of doubt, harsh criticisms, and endless comparisons. But I learned to embrace these obstacles as opportunities for growth. Every setback pushed me to adapt, innovate, and refine my message.

Years passed, and the landscape of social media continued to evolve. New platforms emerged, algorithms changed, and trends came and went. But through it all, one thing remained constant - my commitment to authenticity and connection. And as long as I stayed true to myself and my purpose, I knew I had the power to create meaningful change, one post at a time.

Akshay's role in my journey was not one to be forgotten. He became more than a mentor; he became a partner, a friend. Together, we continued to challenge the status quo, pushing boundaries and redefining the concept of influence. And as our agency grew, we ensured that each influencer we represented shared the same values, creating a network of individuals who were committed to using their platforms for good.

Looking back, it was hard to believe how far I had come since that initial meeting in Akshay's office. I had not only found success as an influencer, but I had also found purpose. And as I scanned through the messages from my followers, sharing stories of change and gratitude, I knew that my journey had only just begun.
