Love on Red Mars
·
Published 5/25/2023In the tense 19th century Martian landscape, demigods Raf and Chesha bravely navigate extreme emotions, explosive action, and a shocking romance to answer the unexpected question: What happens when a passionate kiss is greeted with willing consent?
Raf and Chesha walked together in silence. They had been dating for 3 months, mostly a long-distance relationship, though they had managed to see each other once in person. Their first time meeting was at the boarding school where they both attended. They fell in love over their shared interest of art and music, and the fact that they were both amazingly beautiful people.
They had not yet seen each other's faces, but they knew each others presence like nobody else. Raf, who was the child of Nike, the Greek Goddess of Victory, and Chesha, the daughter of Demeter, the Goddess of Agriculture and Earthly Fertility.
Raf: So...I can't wait to see your face.
Chesha: I'm sure you'll be delighted by it.
Raf: I know we've talked about this before...but you know that I'm going to kiss you right?
Chesha: I know...I have no doubt that you'll do it when we're alone together.
Raf: What do you think it will be like?
Chesha: I hope it doesn't disappoint me after all this time.
Raf: *laughs* You know what I mean!
Chesha: *giggles* Of course! The first time we kissed was during a dance at our school Christmas ball last year. We were pressed together so close that we had no choice but to kiss. It was wonderful. And then we did so again on New Year's Eve when our school party shifted between two separate locations which ended up being very close to one another. It felt like a dream almost being able to kiss you whenever I wanted.
Raf: You're right...that was fantastic! But then we didn't see each other for a while afterwards and I missed you so much! That's why I started writing you those letters every day. It got my mind off things for a little bit at least for a few hours every day.
Chesha: Oh! Well that was very sweet of you! *giggles* And yes...I did receive them all! In fact, I read them often since they made me smile so much knowing that someone cared enough to spend their time on writing me something so wonderful! Even if it was just sending me a message to let me know everything is okay with your day or that you were thinking about me and how happy you were to finally be with me again after such a long time apart!
Raf: Well it was more than that! But yes! All those things too!
The two of them continued walking down the wooded path as they reminisced fondly about their memories together. They had barely known each other for half a year but they connected with one another more than anyone else ever could have imagined based on such little experience together as romantic partners.
Their relationship was very special in many ways because both of them had amazing abilities most people did not possess due to their parentage as demigods. They were both stronger than normal people, faster than normal people, smarter than normal people, and more beautiful than any normal person would ever dare dream of being given the chance to look like either one of them.
They also had an ability few other demigods shared with them; an ability to read minds no matter what distance stood between them physically speaking and mentally speaking as well. They achieved this by touching one another's hands or bodies. These connections came naturally to them both due to their parentage as demigods. However, this ability only worked if neither one of them were wearing gloves or metal clothing, as metal hurt their skin and blocked their powers.
No one in the outside world knew about their existence or where they lived except for the small group of teachers who taught at their boarding school located deep within a forest, far away from civilization. This was where most demigods chose to send their children in order to protect these children from exposure by humanity due to fear that humanity might capture them and use them for evil purposes.
Although they were unable to share their faces and telepathy with regular humans, they still longed to have more friends and contribute to the world. The feeling of loneliness from their upbringing remained deep inside them as they aged into adulthood. These extraordinary children in isolation did not suppress their emotions like the adults of the outside world, who mostly only allowed expressions of anger. All the children desired was open communication, truth, and answers to the questions that haunted them.
As Raf and Chesha held hands, walking among the trees, they wondered what secrets lay beneath society's surface and what powers those in authority possessed. They yearned for a world where they no longer had to hide their true selves and where love, openness, and honesty could prevail.
