Deliberations of Destiny

Published 6/10/2023Desperate to prove her worth as an inventor, a rebellious young woman's determination to build a complex AI leads her to confront an unexpected error - and an even more uncertain future.

"Hey, Sally!"
It was Evelyn, or rather it was Evelyn's head. It was a 3D hologram that floated above the table next to her. If you looked at it from any other angle than directly in front of it, you could see behind it.
"Why don't you have any friends? You're going to be the only kid in our class who isn't going to have a story sent out into space."
Sally had been trying to get Evelyn off her back for weeks now. She'd tried ignoring her, she'd tried being nice to her and doing what she said, but nothing worked.
"I'm not worried about that," Sally said. "I've got my own story project."
"Oh really?" Evelyn asked. "What is it about?"
"Um..." Sally had never told anyone about this before. In fact, she hadn't even told her parents about it because she didn't want them to think it was stupid. But if there was one person in grade 6 that she thought wouldn't laugh at her (aside from maybe Kyle), it was Evelyn.
"Well... I've kind of written a story about a girl who has powers and can turn invisible." Sally stopped short of revealing the girl's name: Celine. But she did tell Evelyn how Celine would use those powers to help others and make things better. She didn't mention the voice in Celine's head - the voice that gave Celine all of her ideas - but Evelyn seemed pretty interested in it all anyway, or at least in the invisibility part of it.
"Whoa! That's so cool! You should just do that as your project instead."
"But then I wouldn't get a chance to send anything out into space," Sally reminded her. "And there are lots of kids who won't have stories sent out either."
"That's true," Evelyn conceded with a sigh. "Okay then, whatever you say." And with that she turned around and disappeared into thin air once again.
