Retribution and Redemption in the Desert
·
Published 6/3/2023In an epic battle between myth and man, courageous army vet Major Carl Peters and his religiously diverse platoon must confront an enormous giantess and risk all to reclaim justice in a war-torn desert landscape, or have their lives forever be impacted by her terrible power.

"*Gods*..."
Carl stuttered, as he stared up at the giantess. She wore brown robes with a hood that covered most of her face. Her hands were stained red with blood, and she was clearly enraged. In her right hand was a large, bloody axe. Her eyes were dark red and evil, and her teeth were sharpened, as if she chewed on rocks every day.
Carl took a deep breath to calm himself down. He was scared out of his mind, but he knew he had to keep his composure in order to survive this situation. He slowly reached into his pocket and pulled out his holy symbol. He muttered a quick prayer to the Gods, begging for protection and guidance... no reply came. He sighed and put the talisman back into his pocket. He glanced around at the rest of his platoon, all of whom were no doubt terrified as well. "We need to run." he whispered to them.
The giantess continued to roar as she approached Carl's squad. They ran away from her quickly, back towards their base camp. The sun beat down upon them mercilessly as they fled across the hot desert sand, but they didn't dare stop- not when their lives were on the line! Carl ran alongside Private Tanner, who was carrying a wounded Private Dunbar over his shoulder. Carl looked back at the giantess again, who was watching them run away with a furious expression on her face. She swung her axe around and threw it at them- it sailed through the air at tremendous speed before embedding itself into a sand dune behind them!
"Shit!" Dunbar screamed in pain as Tanner dropped him onto the ground next to Carl. Dunbar was bleeding profusely from multiple wounds inflicted by the axe; there was no saving him now. The rest of Carl's squad gathered around him and started giving him last rites before they resumed running again. Carl turned away from Dunbar's body and ran ahead of everyone else- he wanted to get a head start so they could escape faster! Suddenly, he heard some kind of loud explosion behind him... he turned around and saw that a massive crater had formed where Dunbar had been standing just moments ago! The sand dune where the axe had landed had exploded too- it looked like someone had set off an atomic bomb there!
"What's going on?!" Tanner shouted to Carl as Dunbar's body lay smoldering in the sand nearby.
"I don't know!" Carl replied nervously, "I think we're in serious trouble!"
To their horror, the giantess reappeared and began violently swinging her gigantic war hammers. Carl closed his eyes tightly, certain he was about to meet his end when suddenly...
Carl gasped as he woke up in a cold sweat on top of his bedsheets. It was only 5:30 AM, and it was still dark outside. Deciding against trying to go back to sleep, Carl got up and prepared to face the day, grumbling about his various life struggles and frustrations.
As he opened his dresser to find a clean shirt, he noticed the many empty cigarette packs inside. It reminded him of the night before when he and his friend Joey smoked until midnight. Joey, who always seemed to need more cigarettes, used them as part of his coping strategy. He even sold pot when people were looking for a fix.
As he dressed, Carl pondered the challenges facing ex-felons like Joey and himself – finding work was nearly impossible, and the world seemed uncaring. The harsh reality of their situation weighed heavily on both of them but, despite the odds, they continued to support one another and search for honest opportunities to build a better future.
