The first time I saw him touch another woman, I was already half-naked in his bed.

Not that he knew I was there. The bathroom door was cracked open, a sliver of yellow light cutting across the rumpled sheets where I’d been waiting for him. Waiting like I always did. Like some kind of trained pet who showed up when called, who spread her legs when asked, who never asked for more than the hour he gave her.

I’d come early. That was my mistake. I wanted to surprise him, to slip into something ridiculous and expensive and watch his eyes go dark when he walked in. Instead, I watched him through that crack in the door. Watched him press some blonde against the wall of his own hallway, her back arching, his hand sliding up her thigh like he’d done it a thousand times before.

Maybe he had.

I should have left. Should have grabbed my coat and walked out and never looked back. But I didn’t. I sat on the edge of his bed, still in my black lace bra and the matching panties he’d bought me last week, and I waited. Because that’s what I did. That’s who I was with him.

His name is Julian Caine. He’s thirty-seven, a partner at one of those law firms that has three letters and a lot of glass walls. He smells like sandalwood and expensive whiskey. He has hands that know exactly where to go and a mouth that knows exactly what to say. And for six months, I’d convinced myself that was enough.

Six months of late-night texts and even later arrivals. Six months of him leaving before sunrise, pressing a kiss to my forehead like I was something precious, then disappearing into the gray morning. Six months of telling myself I didn’t need a title or a promise or a goddamn breakfast together.

I was lying. I knew it then. I know it now.

The door clicked shut. I heard his footsteps, the soft thud of his shoes hitting the floor, the jingle of his belt buckle. Then he pushed the bathroom door open wider and froze.

“Elena.” His voice was smooth, unbothered. Like he’d just found me reading a book on his couch. “You’re early.”

“I wanted to surprise you.”

“Consider me surprised.”

He didn’t look guilty. That was the worst part. He looked at me like I was a problem to be solved, a situation to be managed. He crossed the room and sat on the bed beside me, close enough that I could smell her perfume on his collar. Something floral and cheap.

“Who was she?”

“A client.”

“You fuck your clients?”

He laughed. Actually laughed. A low, easy sound that made my stomach turn. “I don’t fuck my clients, Elena. I entertain them. There’s a difference.”

“I saw your hand on her thigh.”

“And if I told you it meant nothing?”

“I’d say you’re a liar.”

He turned to face me fully then, and I saw something flicker behind his eyes. Not guilt. Not shame. Interest. Like I’d suddenly become more complicated than he’d assumed, and complicated was interesting to him.

“What do you want me to say?” he asked.

“I want you to tell me the truth.”

“The truth is simple.” He reached out and traced the edge of my bra strap with one finger. “I like you. I like her. I like a lot of women. That’s who I am. You knew that when you started this.”

“I thought I could change you.”

“That’s not my job. That’s not anyone’s job.”

I should have slapped him. Should have stood up and walked out and never looked back. But his finger was still on my skin, drawing slow circles, and my body was already betraying me. My breath catching. My skin heating. The stupid, hungry part of me that still wanted him even when I knew better.

“What do you want, Elena?” His voice dropped, softer now. Almost kind. “Tell me what you want and I’ll tell you if I can give it to you.”

I wanted him to choose me. I wanted him to look at me the way he’d looked at her, hungry and possessive, like I was the only woman in the world. I wanted him to mean it when he said my name in the dark.

But I couldn’t say that. Saying it would make it real, and real meant I’d have to admit how pathetic I was.

“I want to stop feeling like an option,” I said.

He was quiet for a long moment. Then he took my hand and pressed it against his chest, right over his heart. It was beating fast. Faster than I expected.

“You’re not an option,” he said. “You’re a choice I keep making.”

It was a beautiful lie. I knew it was a lie. But I wanted to believe it so badly that I let him pull me down onto the sheets, let him kiss me like he meant it, let him prove with his body what he couldn’t prove with his words.

He was good at that. Good at making me forget.

Afterward, I lay in the dark while he slept beside me, his arm draped across my waist, his breath warm against my neck. And I made a decision.

I wasn’t going to be his choice anymore. I wasn’t going to be anyone’s option. I was going to take what I wanted, the way he took what he wanted, and I wasn’t going to apologize for it.

The next morning, I left before he woke up. I didn’t leave a note. I didn’t leave my number. I just walked out into the cold October air and let the door click shut behind me.

And I started planning.
